Gene Francis Evans was born on February 21, 1947 to George and Dorothy (Bauer) Evans at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Yakima. Gene peacefully departed this world on Wednesday December 16, 2015 at his home.
Gene attended St. Joseph Grade School and Marquette High in Yakima. He graduated with the class of 1965, the boy’s state championship basketball team.
Gene was an Army veteran serving in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Following his Army days, Gene worked at 3 golf courses and spent 40-plus years working at the Herald-Republic sports department. Sports were his life.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, a grandfather and a nephew, Nicholas Evans. He is survived by a sister, Jane Hines, and a brother, Doug (Loretta) Evans, 5 nieces, Janelle and Angela Wood, Lyndsay, Jodi, and Elizabeth Evans, 1 nephew, Jeffery Hines, and numerous nieces and nephews.
No funeral services are planned at this time. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled in the spring of 2016. A notice will be placed when a time and date is set.
