These are words Dick wrote some time ago:
"Dick was born June 24, 1941 in Toppenish, WA to the most wonderful parents in the world. The most enjoyable part of his life was working side by side with his dad on the farm. Dick started out on his own at the age of 14. He had numerous jobs. In 1960 he
began his career in the hardware business. From 1974-1986 he was sales manager for Yakima Hardware Company. In 1988 he opened his original hardware store, Stein's Pro Hardware in Meadowbrook Mall. In 2009 he expanded his building, known as Steins'
Ace Hardware today. He semi-retired and turned management over to Brad Cunningham and eventually sold the business in 2016. Dick was always grateful for his loyal staff and customers!"
Dick was known for his big heart, never seeing a stranger and always caring for others. This is especially reflected in his devoted care for his daughter, Tracy, following her stroke in 2018. His greatest joy came from our RV journeys, going on cruises, trips to
Puerto Vallarta and spending time at our cabin and of course, being with those he loved.
The family extends special thanks to Dr. Miele, Dr. Eintracht at Virginia Mason, and Dr. Ortiz in Yakima for their compassionate care.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Kathryn Steinmetz; his brother, Don Steinmetz; his sister, Dolly Hylar; and the mother of his daughters, Jo Ann Taft and brother-in-law Gayle Brewer.
Dick is survived by his wife, Beverly; his sister, Linda Robinson; daughters Dorothy and Tracy; granddaughters Marisa and Joanna, great granddaughter Danae (Beto) Esquivel; son-in-law Paul Engel (Sarah); grandsons Russell and Rowan; sister-in-law Teresa Sjule (David) and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Keith & Keith Funeral Home, 902 West Yakima Ave, Yakima, WA 98902, US, on June 17, 2026, from 11:00 pm to 12:00 pm.
