Hazel was born August 31, 1928 in Longrun, MO to William and Nora (Hampton) Simpson. On March 21, 1946, Hazel married Sherman Herd, the love of her life, and in 1952 they arrived in Yakima, WA.
Hazel was a diligent worker. She worked many agricultural jobs as well as the Del Monte Cannery. In her early years, she taught Sunday School at the Mead Avenue Gospel Tabernacle. Hazel was a prayer warrior. She listened intently and prayed earnestly. She always believed the best solution to any of life's problems was to bring it to the Lord. A faithful parishioner of New Generation Family Worship, Hazel doted on her beloved pastor, Tim O'Neal. She loved to work in her garden, planting Petunias, growing vegetables, and canning and preserving. An excellent cook, Hazel was always happy to entertain family and friends who dropped in. She looked forward to the annual Missouri Picnic where she would bring her "Glorified Beans". She enjoyed recordkeeping for her and Sherman's registered Limousin cattle hobby farm. Later in life, she loved to have girl's night with her sisters and nieces, watching movies and eating popcorn. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. "Nana" looked forward to holidays and summers when Shannon and Charlotte would come visit. She had fond memories of the years Shannon lived with her and "Papa" during trade school, the summers spent taking Heath and Risa to get corndogs and gas for the lawnmower, and trips to the Redwoods and the Oregon Coast. When the grandkids grew up and had kids of their own, she would give them quarters to do little chores for her, and she always had snacks on hand. She loved all of her grandbabies unconditionally with her whole heart. Her most fulfilling lifelong role though was that of wife to Sherman and mother to her two boys, Dallas and Dean. They gave Hazel's life purpose and meaning and she was so proud to call them hers. Hazel was kind, caring, and generous. She modeled Jesus as a friend to all.
Hazel is survived by her son, Dean (Sue) Herd of Wapato, WA; grandchildren Shannon (Dawn) Herd of Wenatchee, WA; Charlotte (Chris) Wood of Astoria, OR; Heath (Angela) Herd of Beaverton, OR; Risa (Ben) Stoller-Black of Wapato, WA; great-grandchildren Brittny, Tanner and Summer Herd; Shae and Dallas Wood; Paige and Emily Herd, and Olivia and Eleanor Stoller-Black; sisters Meda Marsh and Hildred Allen of Wapato, WA; Mildred Phillips of Yakima, WA and Beulah (Jim) Schelle of Early, IA., and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
