Barbara Jean Fox
3/1/1929 – 8/1/2019
Herman “Red” Fox, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed peacefully into our Lord’s loving arms on July 23, 2019. Barbara Jean Fox, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, followed her husband into our Lord’s presence on August 1, 2019. Herman was born on October 8, 1926, in Laurel, Montana, the third child of George and Katherine Fox. He grew up with his large family of four sisters and four brothers in the Granger, Washington area, attending Granger High School until he joined the Marine Corps at the age of 17. Herman spent three years in the military where he was stationed for a time in China and served as an airplane mechanic during World War II.
Barbara was born March 1, 1929 in Yellville, Arkansas, the first child of Jewell and Dorothy Hudson. She grew up with her three sisters and brother in the Ozarks until her later high school years when her family often traveled to Washington to work in the fruit industry. Upon Herman’s return from the military, he pursued this beautiful young woman, Barbara Hudson, who shortly after graduating from Granger High School became his bride on June 28, 1947.
During the first fifteen years of their marriage, they resided in Granger and Herman drove a semi truck for Leonardo Truck Lines. Barbara often accompanied Herman in the truck as he made deliveries across the state. Six years after they were married, the trips for Barb came to an end when they were blessed with their only child, Cindy. Barbara enjoyed her time as a homemaker and stay at home mom. In 1962, the family moved to Mountlake Terrace, Washington, where Herman owned and operated “Red’s Vending Service.”
After five years in the big city, they returned to the Yakima Valley and purchased an apple orchard in Cowiche where Herman quickly learned all the aspects of the fruit growing business. Barbara often helped with the farm work and her favorite task was driving the tractor and moving bins of apples. Later, they moved to Grandview and purchased a larger farm with an apple and pear orchard and Concord grape vineyard. Both Herman and Barbara worked very hard and took pride in the success of their crops. They retired in April, 1989, and moved to Yakima to enjoy the fruits of their labor. In their final years, they spent time traveling to see family in Arkansas and Oregon as well as visiting their daughter and her family in Seattle. Herman and Barbara recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, George and Katherine Fox, sister Catherine Deaton, brother Fred Fox, brother Bill Hindman and brother Jim Hindman. He is survived by his brother Dick Hindman (Terry) of Sedro-Woolley, WA, sister Sally Murray of Zillah, WA, sister Jeanette Patterson (Jim) of Keizer, OR, sister Mary Lou Ball (Jim) of West Linn, OR, and many nieces and nephews. Barbara was preceded in death by husband Herman, her parents Jewell and Dorothy Hudson, sister Jackie Dennis Rodgers, and sister Helen Jo Stubbs. She is survived by her sister Kathryn Gilliland of Yellville, Arkansas, brother James Hudson of Yellville, Arkansas, and many nieces and nephews. They are both survived by their daughter Cindy Hornung of Lynnwood, WA, granddaughter Anne Delmaar-Mines (Corey) of Meridian, ID, and great-granddaughter Rylie Wilson, of Meridian, ID.
May God grant them eternal rest after Herman’s long struggle with many health issues and Barbara’s courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. They both will be dearly missed until we are reunited once again in the blessed life to come where there is no more sickness or sorrow.
