

After graduating from high school he worked on different farms and ranches. In 1936 Henry and two brothers migrated to the state of Washington. After about 6 weeks of fruit work he heard about a job at Montgomery Wards. Henry applied, went to work, and stayed there until he retired in 1977.
Henry served in the U.S. Army for seven months in 1945. Early in 1946 he was among the first to be approved for Flight Training under the GI Bill in the Yakima area. He received his private license later that year. Henry was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus, volunteer driver for the American Red Cross and a former member of Yakima Eagles Lodge #289. He also helped with money counting at St. Paul Catholic Church for almost 40 years.
He and wife Martha enjoyed their children. Some of their happy times were when the children were home and would sit around on the floor with their guitars and sing. After Martha passed away in 1985, he married Mary Spencer on April 12, 1986.
Henry is survived by his wife, Mary Carlton of Yakima; daughters, Ruth Pleasants and Cathy (Doug) Dahlke both of Yakima; sons, Gordon (Val) Carlton of Spokane, Dennis (Dolores) Carlton of Arlington, WA, Bernie Carlton of Moxee, Jim (Kathy) Carlton of Othello, WA and sister-in-law, Geraldine Carlton of Yakima. He is also survived by 29 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Ina Frese; brothers, Walter, Herman and Roy Carlton.
Visitation will be held at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home on Monday, April 15 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a vigil service beginning at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 16 at St. Paul Cathedral with burial following at Calvary Cemetery.
