John Raymond Anderson, 97, of Yakima passed away September 15, 2015. He was born November 5, 1917 in Chicago, Illinois to Iner and Lillian (Klechak) Anderson. John attended Lane Tech High School and worked in Chicago where he owned a manufacturing company. He met and married his wife Elma Laakso in 1941. They raised their four daughters in Mount Prospect, Illinois. In later years, John and Elma moved to Los Angeles, then Seattle and settled in Yakima in 1978. He worked for Decoto Manufacturing and Yakima School District as a machine shop instructor before retiring.
John enjoyed life to the fullest, always wanting to learn new things and take on new challenges. He spent many years camping, fishing and snow skiing with his family, and also loved to race sailboats, play golf and fly airplanes. He taught himself how to use the computer after he retired and then spent many years writing cherished family histories for both the Andersons and the Laaksos.
John always seemed to have an opinion on something (whether anyone wanted to listen or not) and will be forever lovingly remembered for his ardent views on politics and religion so often expressed in his letters to the editor.
He was a person with a strong will and determination that was much admired by his friends, and led him to be a role model for his family. There weren't many problems that he couldn't handle or fight his way through, as evidenced by his health issues later in life. He even earned the nickname "The Miracle Man" from his care staff at Summitview Healthcare Center when he learned to walk again after being paralyzed.
John loved his family with his whole heart and we will miss him.
John was preceded in death by his wife Elma; daughter Jeanne, and his brothers Robert and William Anderson and sister, Shirley Anderson.
He is survived by his daughters Eileen Berg (Arthur) of Seattle, Deborah Meyer (Roger) of Yakima, Mary Fitzgerald (Lawrence) of Yakima and Karen Young (William) of Ocean Shores; and grandchildren Jennie (Gary), Patrick (Katherine), Katie (Joshua), Lynn (Kyle), David (Sarah), Jesse, Elizabeth (Scott) and
five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Keith and Keith Funeral Home in Yakima on Friday, October 9, 2015 at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nature Conservancy or the charity of your choice.
