John Small went to be with our Lord on November 28th at the age of 92. He had suffered a broken hip and failing heart and was looking forward to being in heaven. He was born to Nellie and Philip Small in South Orange, N.J. He accepted Christ as his Savior as a youth at a Bible camp in New York State.
In his teens and young adult years, he worked with inner-city youth in New York City to bring them the gospel. John joined the Army Air Corps and served during WWII as a chaplain’s assistant. After his honorable discharge he attended Emmaus Bible School in Toronto, Ontario, and met Earlene. They were married June 7th, 1948. John and Earlene were blessed with five children and he supported the family by teaching school. However, his main calling was to preach the gospel and help establish and minister in churches in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, then in Missoula, Montana, and finally in the Yakima area. In the summers he directed and taught at many different bible camps. He finished his school teaching career at Westside (Riverside) Christian School in Yakima. John then became a chaplain for Living Care Retirement Community for many years. He loved music, playing the piano and accordion, and singing praises to our Lord. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren have all benefited from his skill and love for music. They are thankful for the piano lessons, the heritage of learning many wonderful Christian songs & hymns, and are carrying on with music ministries of their own.
Earlene went to be with the Lord in 2001, and in 2002 John married her best friend, Carol Yeadon, in Rock, Michigan. He spent eight wonderful years back in the Upper Peninsula ministering in the Rock Bible Chapel that he started over 50 years earlier. When Carol went to heaven in May 2010, John moved back to Yakima and enjoyed living at Peachtree Retirement Community. We are thankful for the staff there, as well as those at Hillcrest Assisted Living (where he lived recently). Those who served him at Memorial Hospital, especially his doctor, David Doornink, provided much comfort in his last days.
He is survived by his five children; daughter, Marilyn (Mike) Calhoun; and sons, Dan (Becky) Small, Bob (Jolene) Small, Gary (Laurie) Small, and Jeff (Yuko) Small, 15 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. Also missing their “Dad” will be Carol’s children; Joyce (Bill) Ducote, Bev (Amby) Swiontek, Tim Yeadon, and Faith (Jeff) Aalto, 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
John was deeply loved by his family. They will miss him greatly, and are looking forward to the grand reunion in heaven. He lived this verse “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” Philippians 1:21.
In lieu of flowers, you may send a memorial donation in John’s name to Tieton Drive Bible Chapel, c/o Keith and Keith Funeral Home, 902 W. Yakima Avenue, Yakima, WA 98902. The contributions will be distributed to various ministries close to John’s heart.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 3rd, at Tieton Drive Bible Chapel in Yakima. There will be a private internment. For an online guestbook and to celebrate the life of John visit www.keithandkeith.com.
