 It was with sadness that I read about Mable Millard's passing.  I know she is home safe; it seems that she passed the way my own father did—at home and quietly.  I see her with her husband  and sisters in reunion. Such is the mercy of gentle, quiet dignity.  That said, I shed tears.  We are all tied together in our humanity and knowing someone for well over forty years underlines this (yes, the little blond boy you all knew back then is 44 now).  I like the image of Mable drawing her last breath surrounded by the energies of memory in her home of over 60 years; again, an echo of my own father's last breath in 1989 in his home of over 30 years.  With her passing is the end of an era.  In the upper half of North 27th Ave, she is the last of the World War II generation and by far the longest resident on the street.  I thought she'd see the century mark and had talked with her not too long ago.  It is different to see the green house on the corner and not be able to talk with a neighbor who knew me literally before I was born.  While knowing someone is home safe is a good thing, we are human and it is nice to be able to talk face to face, or just to be able to at a moment's notice.   When my girlfriend was visiting her mom & sister back east for 2 ½ weeks, we texted and talked daily and I still missed her; such is the humanity of face to face communication. 
I now have the honor of being the young senior resident on the upper half of North 27th Avenue; it was not a mantle I'd expected for some time.   Words fail me; how can one do a snapshot of knowing someone longer than memory even allows?  She was an anchor to the neighborhood, a stabilizing beacon even through the pain of losing people that she loved, in a span of years that go back to when this neighborhood had to have been almost out in the country, with Summitview but a two-lane road, and when Harry S Truman was president:  from a few years past the end of World War II to the internet era.  I believe that when she moved into her house on North 27th, she had a 4-digit phone number:  no prefix of any kind.  There are silent stories in phone numbers and their prefixes.
 It was pleasant just to be able to drop by and chat with her in the kitchen or front lawn.  I am grateful for having known her and always will be.    She was never subtle about her opinions and that was refreshing in the sense that there are many who don't even know who they are, much less able to show it.  I also respected that she stopped bicycling and mowing the lawn before doing so became problems, and that she was in the process of selling her home and moving out before she needed to.   Her strength was tempered by grace and sense.  And there are images:  mowing the lawn with the old push mower, pruning the sycamore tree, bicycling around the neighborhood picking up cans for recycling Christmas presents for her grandchildren, weaving the carpets in the basement; her concern for my very soul, me chatting with her on the front lawn or in the kitchen or her talking with me in my front yard in the day to day casual familiarity that only years can bring.
In the paraphrased words of Stanton speaking of Lincoln's passing:  “Now she belongs to the ages.”; such was what came to me when I read the paper on 14 December, once I got over my initial shock.  I wish everyone well and would hope the best blessings this Christmas season.
