She was born June 19, 1923 to Fred and Rose Knoll in Prosser, Washington. Her parents were immigrants from Odessa Russia and first settled in North Dakota.
At the age of three, her parents moved to the Marchedan Ranch on Powerhouse Road in Yakima.
Marguerite was the youngest child of five and remembers doing the Charleston on the front porch of her parents’ home.
Marguerite attended St. Paul’s Grade School and graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1941.
She met her husband John Hopfinger and they were married March 3, 1943 in Trenton, N.J. before he was deployed to the Bahamas.
Marguerite was a telephone pioneer, working at Pacific N.W. Bell from 1941 and AT&T until 1985. She also worked at Warrell Realty and volunteered at the Yakima Law Library.
Her great love was reading and at the age of 70, she attended YVC for almost two years.
She was a lifelong member of St Paul Cathedral Catholic Church, sang in the church choir, was a member of Catholic Daughters of America, and the VFW Ladies Aux.
She is survived in death by her sons David and James of Yakima, and daughters Marilyn Kennedy of Kauai, Hawaii and Joann Polley of San Diego, CA; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, son Donald and four siblings.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Langevin El Paraiso Funeral Home with a Rosary beginning at 5:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 23, 2018 at St. Paul Cathedral with burial following at Calvary Cemetery.
