Mike Smithhisler passed away with family at his side on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 at Crescent Health Care in Yakima, Washington where he had spent the last six months in Hospice care.
Mike was born in Portland, Oregon on June 7, 1939 to Phillip Jacob Smithhisler, originally from Mt. Vernon, Ohio, and Edwina Jones Smithhisler, originally from Spokane, Washington.
The family later moved to Yakima, Washington where Mike attended Roosevelt and Gilbert Elementary Schools, served as ASB President at Franklin Junior High and Yakima Senior High where he was Senior Class President. He graduated from Washington State University with a BA in Social Studies and Central Washington State University for his Master of Education degree.
After graduation Mike spent over 40 years of his life as a high school and middle school teacher that included coaching a variety of sports. His long-time passion was his role as a tennis coach at Davis High. He also organized and led tournaments, lessons and clinics at Larson Park.
Another passion for Mike was advocating on behalf of his fellow teachers. He served as Yakima Education Association President and Commission Chair and Delegate to the State and National Associations.
He would often express his thanks for family, friends and all the kids he had the privilege to teach and coach.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Dave. He is survived by his twin brother Ed, his sister Kathy and their families and his son Scott.
Mike’s family would like to thank the caregivers at Terraces at Summitview, Crescent Health Care and MultiCare Memorial Hospital and Hospice Services for everything they did to help him.
At his request there will not be a burial service but instead a gathering of his family and friends will be held on Sunday, September 21st from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at Gilbert Cellars, 2620 Draper Road, Yakima, Washington. Website Link: https://gilbertcellars.com/
