Morris was born Sept. 20th, 1926 in Concord, Ark. His parents were Marion Claude Light and Elizabeth Arkie Brock. He started school in Concord, Ark. but during the depression they moved several times and ended up settling in Tulare, CA. In 1944, he entered the Army where he served in the occupational forces in Japan until 1946. While there, he played guitar in a group with Porter Wagoner. Following the Army, he attended College of the Sequoias in Visalia, CA where he studied refrigeration and air conditioning. He worked for Montgomery Ward in Tulare until he married his sweetheart, Betty McClung. In 1952, they moved to Yakima where they settled and raised their family. Morris worked for the Bon Marche for 22 years before he and his brother, Howard, started Light Brothers Appliance Service. He retired in 1988 and that is when Morris and Betty's travel adventures began. They were involved in Mobile Missionaries Assistance Program (MMAP) and traveled around the country helping many communities updating churches and doing volunteer work. One of his favorite projects was helping to build a Christian radio station in Alaska. After 5 years with MMAP, they bought another home and settled down with their family in Yakima.
Morris was very involved in his church, Christian Life Center. He was one of the original members when it was known as Nob Hill Church of God. His influence and wise counsel contributed to the phenomenal growth of the church during the 1970's and 80's. He loved Jesus Christ with all his heart and served the church for 60 years with devotion. He held positions as the Church Clerk, advised on the Pastor's Council, taught Bible studies, and served on Evangelism Outreach. Many people found him to be a father to them, as well as a wise counselor. He was always gracious and thoughtful. He loved the church and was a support to many Pastors, State Overseers, and Youth Directors. He loved his church and the congregation with all of his heart.
Morris enjoyed many hobbies. He was a musician, athlete, coach, and mentor to many throughout his life. One great story we love to hear about is when he was in high school participating in track and field, he raced and beat Olympian, Bob Mathias. He was passionate about baseball and considered playing professionally. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing games, fishing and researching the Light family genealogy.
Morris is survived by his loving wife, Betty of 61 years, his daughter Rev. Sharon Lyon, (Rev. Michael Lyon); his son, Melvin Light (Linda); his son Clayton Light (Lynn); his son, George Light; son-in-law, Dr. Stephen Younker (Beth);one sister, Avon Sybert, and numerous nieces and nephews. Morris was a devoted grandfather to 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
After Jesus took Morris in his arms he was welcomed into Heaven by his daughter, Sandy Younker, his parents, Marion and Elizabeth Light, his brothers, Howard, Lloyd, Leon, and Ron Light and his sister, Claudine Gray.
He will be missed immeasurably, but his love, compassion and wisdom is his legacy. That will live on in our family and many others until we meet him again. We love you!
