

Raymond Charles Barney, 80, of Yakima passed away Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. He was born February 17, 1931 to Raymond C. and Katherin M. (Wilson) Barney in San Francisco, CA.
Ray worked summers in the woods logging; in the spring of 1950 he joined the U.S. Navy, attended boot camp in San, Diego and in the fall attended Naval Airman’s School in Memphis Tenn., then attended Naval Specialist School in Philadelphia, PA. After completing his training Ray was assigned to an aircraft carrier and sent to a seaplane base in Norfolk VA. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
Ray worked numerous jobs including selling ice cream and Franz bread, his great love though was working with trees and wood products. He purchased a small farm in Boring, OR where he owned and operated a Christmas tree farm. Ray and others started Northwest Log Scalers and scaled logs throughout the northwest and in Alaska, he was the President of the company for many years. After his (semi-retirement) he worked at building picnic tables, cedar and sea chests along with many wooden toys.
He was an avid supporter of many charities including the Salvation Army, Union Gospel Mission and the Alpine Boys Ranch. His greatest love was family, always teaching them about caring for others. Ray was a very caring and giving person he was the caregiver for many family members. He will be greatly missed by family, friends and acquaintances.Ray was baptized in the Greater Portland Baptist Church and was a member of the Terrace Heights Baptist Church.
Ray is survived by his wife, Linda K. Barney; sons, Raymond Clyde (Judy) Barney of Gresham, OR; Robert (Mary) Barney of Boring, OR; daughters, Gail (Mark) Dahn of Whidby Island, WA; Carol (David) Brown of Utah; step-daughter, Janelle (Tim) Burt of Boring, OR; step-son, Jason Blair (Juli) Thompson of Middletown, CA and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and daughter, Barbara Hungerford and first wife, Beverly Barney.
A Memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, September 4, 2011 at Keith & Keith Funeral Home 9th Avenue.
