An excerpt from “The Green Fields of the Mind” (Rod’s favorite)
-Bart Giamatti on baseball
“It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings….”
Rod was born in Seattle, Washington November 25, 1960 to Doug and Marj Peters. He attended Selah schools since kindergarten and graduated from Selah High School in 1979 where he excelled in school and loved the teamwork of football and baseball. Rod graduated from Willamette University and Willamette University Law School. He practiced law in Oregon. While attending law school, he met his wife and was married for 9 years. During his college summers, he worked for Yakima County parks and became an avid volunteer and advocate for parks in Oregon.
Rod loved many family trips and adventures traveling to numerous states and national parks. He enjoyed the annual Thanksgiving trip to Neskowin, Oregon with extended family. He loved sports and discussing any game, especially the art of baseball. Rod visited baseball parks across the country with his dad and brother from New York to Boston to Detroit to Phoenix and Seattle. He and his dad even attended the first game of the Seattle Pilots in 1969. He enjoyed the outdoors, exploring the skies with his telescope, and hikes including an ascent of Mt Rainier. Rod had an incredible gift for remembering people, events, facts, and music.
Rod was deeply devoted and loved his family. He is survived by a family that loved him deeply - his parents, siblings Heather (Dick), Sally (Rob) and Dan (Amy), nieces and nephew Carly, Lauren, Mary, Ella and Whit and a loving extended family. A family memorial will be held over the summer.
Rod passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2019 in Yakima, Washington. Donations in his memory may be made to the Yakima Humane Society and the Yakima Greenway.
