

Ruscella “Rusty” Schafer (70) of Yakima,Washington, passed away Friday, October 15, 2010, with family around her after a courageous battle with cancer.
Rusty was born April 19, 1940, to Albert J. and Medora (Quesnell) Sybouts in Yakima.
She attended Holy Rosary School in Moxee graduating from Moxee High. After high school she married Jim Watkins and they had a son, Tom.
On November 4, 1975, she married Melvin Schafer.
Rusty was a very caring person and as such spent many hours visiting the elderly in nursing homes who had no one. She was a member of the Horizon Quilters Unlimited of Grandview and the Cotton Club, a quilting group of best friends. She also judged quilts in competition. She loved watching her grandsons play many different sports. She loved gardening; was a loyal Mariner fan; and read the Bible daily. She also taught several years in the CRE program at Holy Rosary Church in Moxee.
A cruise to Alaska the last of June with her husband, Mel; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Lisa Watkins and her grandsons was the highlight of her life.
Rusty is survived by her husband, Melvin Schafer; her son, Tom (Lisa) Watkins and her grandsons, Matthew and Jonathan, all of Selah; brothers, Marland (Tina) Sybouts of Seattle; Gary (Marlene) Sybouts of Yakima; Francis “Frank” (Evelyn) Sybouts of Longview; half-brothers, Darryl (Rita) Sybouts of Moxee; Dwayne Sybouts of Tieton; Darwin (Bea) Sybouts of Naches; Darren (Ginnelle) Sybouts of Palmer, Alaska; half-sisters, Denise (David) Olsen of Naches; Darlene Sybouts of Naches; Debra “Debee” (Mark) Berry; sister-in-law, Betty Sybouts of Spokane; step-daughters, Linda (Vincent) Urlacher of Yakima and Susan Montalvo of Harford, Connecticut.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert J. and Medora Sybouts; step-mother, Dorothy Sybouts; and brother, Ron Sybouts.
Our sincere gratitude goes to the staff at Wynwood of Yakima for their excellent care and loving compassion for Rusty during her last days.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 4, 2010 at the Keith & Keith Terrace Heights Chapel. Reception to follow after the service.
