

Born in Portland, Oregon, to Sterling Robert and Cecilia (Lutz) Cody on June 16, 1933, the family moved shortly thereafter to Yakima. Sharlot attended St. Joseph Grade School and High School, graduating in 1951. She continued her education at the University of San Francisco, UC Berkley, and UC Davis, earning a degree in English.
She returned to Yakima to teach at Highland High School where she was introduced to her future husband, Leo Joseph Cozza, by life-long friend Ralph Thomas.
Sharlot and Leo were married July, 1960. Their son John Patrick was born in 1961. Shortly after John’s birth she began teaching at Carroll High School. When it closed she taught at East Valley High School until her retirement.
After she retired, she fulfilled a life-long dream by starting a horse ranch in the West Valley area. At one time she had nine registered Arabian horses and seven purebred miniature horses.
Sharlot also traveled extensively in Europe, visiting her son many times in Vienna while he was studying music there.
She was preceded in death by her husband Leo and her brother Sterling Robert Cody, Jr. She is survived by her son John and grandsons Joey and Jack. Sharlot, a life-long Catholic, was baptized at St. Paul Cathedral and later married there.
A Memorial Service at St. Paul Cathedral will be held on Tuesday, September 30th at 10:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Yakima, in care of Keith and Keith Funeral Home.
