Verna was born July 29, 1922 to Gobie and Frances (Willard) Westerman in Sedro Woolley, WA. She graduated May 30, 1939 from Sedro Wooley High school as Valedictorian of her class of 130. Her extracurricular activities included tumbling team, usher, ad solicitor for Cub paper, and business manager of Kumtux annual. She worked her way through college doing secretarial work for the intermediate supervisor, janitor work and secretarial work at YWCA. She received a 3 year teaching certificate from Western Washington College of Education in 1942. She taught algebra and math at Shelton Jr. High for 1 year, 7th and 8th grade math at Redmond, WA for 2 years, and 30 years in Toppenish, WA mostly 4th grade. Verna had three children while married to Floyd Hayton, Rodney, Glen and Adele. She earned extra educational credits at Eastern Washington College, Cheney, Oregon State University, San Diego State University, and Central Washington College of Education at Ellensburg to earn her 5th year teaching credentials.
Verna retired from teaching in 1984, and married Lee Turner in 1985. She belonged to Terrace Heights Assembly of God church, Gateswingers Square Dance Club, Yakima Rounders, and camped with the Sagebrush Hoppers Good Sam campers until it disbanded.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Roger Westerman; sons Rodney Hayton, Glen Hayton and husband Lee Turner.
Verna is survived by her daughter, Adele Hartman (Nick) of Redmond, WA; nieces Nancy Wilke of Redmond, WA, Eleanor Westerman Hackler of Bellevue, WA; and nephew, Gary Westerman of Moses Lake, WA; step-son, David Turner (Yaeko) of Lake Stevens; four step-grandchildren, Melissa (Joe) Califano, David Turner Jr., Christopher (Jennifer) Turner, Julie (Jessie) Eastmond, and 7 step great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2013 1:00 p.m., at the Terrace Heights Assembly of God Church.
