William Harvey Shuel passed away in his home surrounded by his family on Friday, August 19th, 2016. He was born on September 14th, 1936 in Wray, Colorado to Willard and Gladys (Lucile) Shuel. He was 79 years old. The Shuel family relocated to Yakima, Washington in 1942. He grew up with his three brothers: Donald, John (Jack) and Raymond Shuel. The Shuel brothers have always maintained a very close relationship. They prioritized their busy schedules to meet once a week for lunch and often included special business associates as their guests. As part of this tradition, they would roll dice and flip coins to determine who would get ‘stuck’ paying the bill. He served for 4 years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed in San Marcos, Texas and Iwo Jima, Japan during his service. He was in charge of refueling airplanes. After completing his service, he returned to Yakima, WA and married the love of his life, Irma A. Crowfeather. They were married in Coeur d’Alene, ID on May 23rd, 1959. He started off his lumber career with working in the lumber industry for Boise Cascade and then managed Harrah Lumber in Harrah, WA. In 1967 he founded Shuel’s Hardware and Lumber CO in Selah, WA and then moved his business in 1974 opening Shuel’s Wholesale Lumber Company in Yakima, WA. In 2008, he retired and sold Shuel’s Lumber to his three most loyal employees: Dayna Shuel (daughter), Bob Velasquez and John Dell. Bill and Irma were active members of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Selah, WA since its beginning. Bill served on the Finance Committee to establish the first Catholic Church in Selah and was a member of Knights of Columbus. Bill was known by many different names: dad, husband, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, father-in-law, gramps, papa, great grandpa, loyal confidant and friend. Bill was a good man with a big heart, known for having a strong work ethic and being an exceptional businessman who was loved and respected by many. His love of faith, family, friends, dogs, sports and his good humor was contagious and apparent to everyone who had the privilege to know him. Those who were special friends in his life were his financial advisor, Jim Linn and his gambling buddies, George Fagan and Carl Smith. Bill is survived by his children and their spouses: Dayna Shuel of Selah, Rona (Randy) Popp of Maple Valley, Barbara (Blayne) Bucy of Maple Valley and William II ‘Billy’ (Lorna) Shuel of Selah; his grandchildren: Kaycee (Danny) Rush, Hailey (Terry) Meade, Shane Brule, Travis Popp, Eric Brule, Trenton Bucy, Madisyn Bucy and Bobbie Smoot and his great-grandchildren: Bailey Rush, Riley Rush, and Darian Salazar and his two brothers, Jack and Ray Shuel, sisters-in-law Darlene Shuel, Yvonne Shuel, Diane Tietsort, Georgia LaFavre and many nieces and nephews.
