South Portland – Alfred “Al” Lincoln Nichols, 92, of Yarmouth, formerly of Rockland, died on Sunday October 24, 2010. He was born on December 27, 1917 in Nobleboro, ME, a son of Cora (Benner) and Wesley Nichols. He was educated in local schools and was a graduate of Lincoln Academy. He went on to Hanson’s Barber School in Portland and was a barber for over 45 years. On September 1, 1936 he married the love of his life, Daisy Gray.
During WWII, Al enlisted in the US Navy and served in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged as a Petty Officer, Second Class, and he and Daisy settled in Rockland where he operated Nichols Barber Shop until his retirement. In recognition of his dedication to the Maine Barbers Association he received the Barber of the Year Award. He was personable, outgoing and had a great sense of humor – traits that helped make him well suited to be a barber.
Al was very civic minded and devoted much time to the Parks and Recreation Department, helping coach Little League, supporting Cub Scouts and serving on the School Board. He was a member of the American Legion, the Elks, the Shriners and was a 32nd degree Mason. He will be remembered for his forward thinking and incredible positive attitude. Al was never one to look back or express regret but was happy and fully enjoyed living in the moment. Family and friends was all that “it” was about. If you weren’t family – you were a friend.
Al is survived by his three children: Mary Caldwell and her husband Robert of Keene, NH; Dr. Wesley G. Nichols and his wife Nancy of New London, NH; Cindy Scott and her husband Gregory of Freeport, ME; seven grandchildren: Bill Caldwell and his wife Eileen and their children Riley and Liam; Sean Caldwell and his wife Karen and their children Morgan and Collin; Erik Caldwell and his wife Jennie and their children Kayley and Kaidin; Scott Nichols and his wife Jess; Todd Nichols and his wife Lindsay and their daughter Madelyn; Ryan Scott and Whitney Scott. Al was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Daisy; his sister Elizabeth Cousins and his brother John M. Nichols.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of the South Portland Nursing Home for the wonderful care they provided Al while he lived there.
