May 30, 1926 – October 30, 2014
Cumberland - Anne M. Sarapas, of Cumberland, ME died October 30, 2014 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, where she spent her last few days surrounded by her loving family. She passed during a brief but beautiful sun shower with the sky illuminated by rainbows. Anne was an exceptional woman who had a lifetime 'following' of the friends she touched during a very rich 88 year life. She was admired, loved and respected by too many to count.
Anne was born in Worcester, MA to Francis and Marion Marrone. Accepted by The Julliard School to become an operatic singer, Anne decided it was more important to raise a family. Yet music remained an important part of her life, whether singing as the soprano soloist at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, directing youth musicals, or just singing with family and friends.
Anne and her family spent every summer beginning in 1962 on Peaks Island, which always held a special place in her heart, and where she lived year-round for five years before moving to Cumberland. It was on Peaks that Anne established the most enduring friendships of her life, relationships that continued until her death.
After raising 5 children, Anne worked in the medical profession, where she helped launch or support the careers of several doctors: on Peaks Island at the Peaks Island Health Center, in Boston at Allergy and Asthma Associates, and in Portland at Portland Gastroenterology.
Anne was spiritual in a non-traditional way and believed deeply in mind-body connection and the power of love to heal. Before any of this was mainstream, Anne practiced yoga, meditation, sounding, breath work and always loved a good massage. If there was something new, she would try it. She also found great pleasure in gardening, reading, journaling, and spending time with family, friends or simply with her own thoughts. Anne never stopped wanting to learn, engage and grow intellectually. Until days before her death, she was reading books about the brain, poetry, psychology, philosophy, as well as her lifelong passion of good mysteries.
Besides her parents, Anne was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Richard, and their son Mark. She leaves her daughter Maria and her husband David Pyman of Cheshire, CT, and their children Aaron, Kate, Andy and Chris; her son Paul of Maynard, MA and his children Casey and Liana and their mother, Tricia Crafts; her son Andy and his wife Suzanne Keller of Yarmouth, ME and their daughter Chloe; her daughter Joanna Landsman of Cumberland, ME and her former husband Dale; her daughter-in-law Judy, Mark’s widow, and their son JJ, and Mark’s sons Matthew and Scott. She also leaves 8 great-grandchildren.
A time of gathering and visitation will be held on Monday, November 3 from 5 -7 PM at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, ME 04096. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 4 at 11:00 AM at First Universalist Church, 97 Main Street, Yarmouth with a reception following in the church hall.
