Pearl Harbor Survivor
Bertram Earl Davis, 94, of Falmouth, formerly of Cumberland, died on Friday August 30, 2013 at the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris. He was born in Lynn, MA on April 12, 1919 the son of Florence (MacNeil) and Harry Boone Davis. With his father in the Navy, the family traveled extensively, so following in his father’s footsteps, he enlisted in the Navy after leaving Santa Fe High School.
Bert had a 20 year career in the Navy with many notable experiences; most significant were the events of December 7, 1941 in Pearl Harbor. He often shared his experience of that day in Pearl Harbor with Greely High School students taking US History and his recollections are included in a compilation of stories entitled, “Someone Talked! Personal experiences of World War II” printed in 1999 by the Oral History Class at Greely High School.
After his “quick 20” in the Navy, Bert embarked on a 35 year career in oceanographic research, working with Jacques Cousteau and his sons, Bob Ballard and others. He was a member of the Marine Society, the state rep for the Pearl Harbor Association, the Falmouth Fire Auxiliary, the Portland Am Vets, the South Portland VFW and American Legion Post 86 in Gray.
Bert had a great love of reading and used books to teach himself any number of things throughout his life that not only enriched him personally but also furthered his career. He enjoyed music, woodworking (furniture), basket making, caning chairs and being a rock hound.
Bert is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jo (Daniels) Davis of Falmouth; his two children: daughter “Jodi” and son Dennis; three grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Margaret and Ruth; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Jeannie.
