Carol Anne Fredriksen, of Falmouth, Maine, passed away September 15th, 2025, one day shy of her 85th birthday.
She was born on September 16, 1940, the daughter of the late Margaret (LaRose) and Oscar Fredriksen.
She is survived by nephew Michael Fredriksen and wife Nichole of Plymouth, MA, and their children Natalie and Arianna, much loved cousins of the Fredriksen and LaRose families, and cherished lifelong friends.
She graduated from Falmouth High School in 1958 and went onto Westbrook Junior College in the Medical Technology curriculum, graduating magna cum laude in 1960. Later she completed a B.S. degree in Business Administration.
The pinnacle of Carol’s career was her 31 years with The People to People Health Foundation (Project HOPE). She first joined the organization in 1969 as a volunteer, serving as Chief Laboratory Technologist aboard the hospital ship HOPE during its mission to Tunisia. Deeply inspired by their philosophy of "helping others help themselves" through education. At the end of the voyage, Carol was promoted to a full-time staff role as Allied Health Coordinator. In this capacity, she led non-nursing staff and participated in recruiting and training for future missions, including a voyage to Jamaica and two additional ship voyages to Natal and Maceió, Brazil.
Following the retirement of the HOPE ship, Carol joined HOPE headquarters in Washington, D.C. and Virginia, continuing her work as Director in Allied Health, Personnel and Director of of Program Administration for land based programs. Her passion for health education and cultural collaboration led her to work on program development in Barbados, Saint Lucia, Ethiopia, Egypt, and El Salvador. She found deep fulfillment working across cultures, fostering partnerships to enhance healthcare systems and train local professionals. She retired in 2000.
Rediscovering Maine in her retirement, she volunteered with numerous organizations over the years, of note, Meals on Wheels, Falmouth Community Programs, Casco Bay YMCA, Northern Lights VNA and Hospice, UNE/Westbrook College Alumni Association, and the Project HOPE Colleagues in Global Health Association.
Carol's love of skiing was initially developed on the hills across Depot Road in Falmouth where she grew up, further developed at Westbrook College, then at the Dartmouth Skiway. In Colorado she skied at as many areas as possible, including Vail.
Her competitive activity continued with pitching horseshoes as an award winning member of the Winchester, Virginia Horseshoe Club where she served as Secretary and Treasurer and in retirement at the Kennebeck Horseshoe Club.
She also enjoyed knitting, producing stained glass creations, and extraordinary world travels.
Carol was admired for her integrity, warmth, and dedication to service. Her positive outlook through various obstacles and challenges in life showed her true strengths. Her legacy lives on in the many healthcare professionals she mentored, the communities she touched worldwide, and the family and friends who cherished her.
