We celebrate the life of Colin Kaveney, who died suddenly at home on September 22, 2026. Born in Everett, MA, on April 2, 1953 to James P. and Mary T. (Leary) Kaveney, he was the youngest of three sons. At the age of three, Colin moved with his family to what he considered Utopia, sometimes known as Needham, MA, where he made many lifelong friends. He attended St. Joseph’s School and later, Catholic Memorial H.S. in West Roxbury and earned a Bachelor’s Degree at UMass Amherst and a Master’s Degree in Communication at Boston University.
A shared love of books and libraries led to his meeting Paula Crowley when they were both employed at the Needham Public Library. After marrying, they moved to Maine, where he based his career in communication technology sales. He loved all sports, especially the Boston area teams, was an avid baseball card collector, and enjoyed playing golf with friends and family. He and Paula enjoyed travel abroad, particularly a trip to Ireland in 2023, when they were able to connect with relatives they met through genealogical websites. Along with his love for his wife and reading, his other great love was for children, especially his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, who all returned his love in equal measure. He taught his Maine nephews how to ski, enjoyed bringing them to Sugarloaf and took great delight in researching and choosing personal gifts for them, which reflected his warmth, kindness and gentle spirit. He was an incredible uncle and great great-uncle. In later years, he served on the Freeport Public Library’s Board of Trustees and on the Friends of the Library Board. It is fitting that his career ended with a retirement job at the afterschool program at St. John’s School in Brunswick, where he made many young friends who loved “Mr. Colin”.
Colin will be deeply missed as he leaves behind so many devoted friends and family members. He is survived by his wife of 43 years Paula, his older brother Brian and sister-in-law Jane (Reynolds) Kaveney, his niece Laura Kaveney and husband Dan Kuhlmann and his nephew Jeffrey and wife Jen (Roach) Kaveney. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Carolyn Czekaj and husband Ed, and Susan Crowley Smith and husband Jim, along with niece Beth Ickes and husband Brian; and nephews Chris Czekaj and wife Kristi, Matt Smith and wife Catalina Silva, and Mike Smith and wife Liana Popkin. His memory will live on through his beloved great-nieces and great-nephews Neila and Brady Kaveney; Zyah Kaveney Kuhlmann; Brielle Poplin; Grayson and Alexa Ickes; Alexandra, Olivia and Benjamin Smith; and Tobias and Meila Smith. He is now reunited with his late oldest brother Jim.
