David L. Smith was born in Freeport, ME. to Emily S. & Bryan J. Smith of Lambert Road. He attended Freeport Schools, and moved to Connecticut in 1948 where he worked at Wallace Silversmiths in Wallingford and joined the National Guard. His unit was activated during the Korea War, and then sent to Germany in 1950. He enlisted in 1953 and honorably discharged in 1955, and married his childhood sweetheart, Joyce Scott and lived in CT.
In 1963 they returned to Maine to raise their two children, Christie and Scott in Yarmouth. He worked for Portland Motor Sales, Rowe Ford and then became an Independent Insurance Agent and Real Estate Broker. He was a member of the Freeport Lions Club and sponsored the first girls little league team. He enjoyed attending high school basketball games especially when his son Scott played at Yarmouth.
He retired to Florida in 1986 and enjoyed golf with his wife at Lake Side Country Club, and Freeport Country Club where he was Club Champ twice and once Club Champ at Lake Side Country Club; he also enjoyed golf at Lake Kezar Country Club in Lovell, ME. He enjoyed teaching the finer skills of golf, especially to youngsters.
He took great pride in his children’s and grandchildren’s activities and attended many of their events and games. He spent his later years between in his home on a golf course in Fl., and summers at his daughter and son-in-law’s home in Yarmouth. His children were his pride and joy. Christie S. Harriman of Yarmouth & Zachary Scott Smith of Pittsburgh, PA., he considered them his greatest achievement in life. He was very close to his son-in-law Phil Harriman whom he had known as a teenager.
He felt great pride in his grandchildren, Jocelyn Bourassa, Madelyn Roberts & Jared Harriman, and was always content to spend summers near them. He enjoyed teaching them to swim and having them visit overnight and coming to visit him in FL.
He was the best handyman, always able to fix anything that needed repair. He was plumber, electrician and carpenter for his wife Joyce who bragged that she never needed to call a repairman, except for the refrigerator. He especially enjoyed carpentry, playing cards with his friends and relatives.
He was predeceased by his brother Maynard and his parents. He is survived by his sisters, Lois Carter & Marion Libby, and his sister-in-law Melva Smith. He was beloved by his children and grandchildren who called him Papa and his great granddaughter Eden Bourassa who thought he was lovable, funny and always good for a handout of advice.
He was always proud that he could provide a college education for his children as he had not had that opportunity himself.
Private memorial service will be held with family and friends at a late date.
