

Yarmouth, ME – Donald John Morton, Sr., 83, of Falmouth, ME died peacefully with family by his side on July 15, 2014. Don Morton, born in Brooklyn, NY, was the son of Elwood and Gladys (Hassler) Morton.
He is survived by his wife, Ann (Tilden) of Falmouth, ME; his daughter Sandy and her partner Scott Dodd of Yarmouth, ME; his son Donald Jr. and his wife Claire of Fairbanks, AK; his daughter Mary Ann and her husband Mark Kasperson of Cheshire, CT; as well as a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also leaves his brother Walter H. Morton of New York City and his sister Marjorie Patton of King of Prussia, PA.
Don’s love of learning led him to attain two Doctorate degrees in Plant Pathology and Library Science from the University of California at Berkeley and Simmons College, Boston, respectively. Following several years as a plant pathologist he became Director of the University of Massachusetts Medical School Lamar Soutter Library and served 25 years before retirement in that field. Colleagues remember him as a “kind-hearted, humble person with a strong work ethic”. His family remembers him as a loving father and husband, devoting most of his time to them. Don served as an inspiration to those who follow.
