Elaine Marie Butland

Elaine was born in Portland, Maine on August 5, 1946, a daughter of Thomas J. and Lena (Quattropani) Haggerty. She grew up in Cumberland alongside her three sisters Nancy Jordan (David) of South Portland, Kathleen Cummings (George) of Freeport and DeeDee Haggerty of Boston, Massachusetts.

Elaine graduated from Greely High School in 1965, where she was a cheerleader. She went on to attend Champlain Junior College in Burlington, Vermont. Horseback riding and skiing were activities she enjoyed during this time.

It was while working at the Galley Restaurant at Handy Boat in Falmouth that Elaine met her future husband, Ronald Butland. The two were married in December of 1967 and soon welcomed two daughters, Karen Butland (Tip Kimball) in 1968 and Amy Read (Jeff Read) in 1969.

Elaine and Ron built a full life together. Side by side, they took on two additions to their family home, and Elaine was right there through every stage of the projects. As a couple they enjoyed trips with friends to Grand Lake Stream, Nantucket, and the Grand Canyon. She loved sailing and boating around Casco Bay with the Dolphin Marina among her favorite destinations, where her go to order was always the fish chowder with a blueberry muffin.

Elaine spent over 20 years as an office manager at Head & Neck Associates in Portland, a role she was deeply dedicated to always giving 100 percent and forming lasting friendships with colleagues along the way. Never one to sit still, she came out of retirement quickly and worked part-time at Brian Gilbert Associates in Cumberland.

After the passing of her husband, Elaine kept busy with work, family, and friends. She had memorable trips to England, Italy and Ireland with her older sister. A highlight was visiting their ancestral home in Bantry Bay, Cork County, Ireland. She spent many hours at her good friend’s beach house in Old Orchard, soaking up the sun, monthly lunches with the “Greely Girls” and even dabbled in golf. Elaine loved music whether it was attending musical theater or playing her favorite songs from the 60s and 70s. Above all, her greatest joy was spending time with her granddaughter Allie Read.

The family would like to express their gratitude for the care she received at Falmouth House, Maine Medical Center and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.

Visiting hours will be held from 4-6 pm on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. A private family Graveside Service will be held Friday at Moss Side Cemetery in Cumberland. A Celebration of Life welcoming all of Elaine’s friends and family will be announced at a later date.
