OBITUARY

Elizabeth Betsy Curit Gosselin

August 17, 1934January 10, 2013

Elizabeth P. Gosselin (Betsy) North Yarmouth - Elizabeth Phelps Gosselin (Curit) of North Yarmouth, ME passed away on January 10, 2013, surrounded by her family. Betsy was born August 17, 1934 in Winchester, MA the daughter of Marjorie Sands (Likins) and Barton Francis Curit. The oldest of three daughters, she grew up in Barrington, RI and graduated from Lincoln School in Providence, Class of 1952 and from Middlebury College, Class of 1956 with a degree in chemistry. She and her husband, Paul A. Gosselin first lived in Cheshire, CT with their three sons: Christopher, Eric and John. In 1974, the family moved to Yarmouth, ME, where she lived for more than 25 years. In 2001, she and Paul moved to their present home in North Yarmouth. She began her career working for American Cyanamid in Stamford, CT, as a chemist. She later worked as a proofreader for scientific journals and also worked for several local banks, including Peoples Heritage Bank in Yarmouth, where she was the branch manager. In the mid-1990s she changed careers and became a real estate broker working for RE/MAX Heritage in Yarmouth. She and Paul founded Yarmouth Auto Sales, a business they operated for more than 10 years in Yarmouth and Freeport until their retirement in 2005. Throughout her career, her exceptional analytical, organizational, and financial skills were incredible assets. Betsy was a devoted and loving wife and mother, who touched all those who knew her. Together with Paul, she raised her three sons with incredible grace, courage, and determination. This included taking the kids to hockey practice at 6:00am on Sundays and also making sure the family made time to have dinner every night at the family dinner table. Betsy was the center of the family who always planned and organized family gatherings during the year, and especially at holiday time, which was her favorite time of year.

Betsy enjoyed many activities, but her favorites were spending time with her family and friends, especially her 5 grandchildren, gardening and bird watching. She was always available for a push on the swing set, help coloring, or reading a book. She could be found most days during the spring, summer, and fall tending to her beautiful flowers and trees, and always had a copy of Peterson’s Field Guide to Birds of North America and a pair of binoculars at the ready. Over the past several years, Betsy and Paul wintered in Englewood, FL, forming many new and lasting friendships in their community. Betsy will be forever loved and remembered by her husband of 45 years, Paul Gosselin of North Yarmouth; sons Chris Gosselin and his wife Cyndy of Hudson, NH; Eric Gosselin of Windham, ME; John Gosselin and his wife Bethany Beausang of South Portland, ME; sisters Barbara Thorp of Ithaca, NY and Martha Hough and her husband Walter of Savannah, GA and Wakefield, RI; five grandchildren: Gabrielle, Tyler, Alex, Evan, and Lily Gosselin; as well as several nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held at Lindquist Funeral Home in Yarmouth, Maine, on Sunday, January 13, from 2-4pm, with tributes and prayer beginning at 3:30pm. Please visit www.lindquistfuneralhome.com to view a video collage of Betsy’s life and to share condolences, memories and tributes with her family. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Betsy Gosselin can be made to the National Fragile X Foundation, fragilex.org, 1615 Bonanza St. Suite 202, Walnut Creek, CA 94596.

My thoughts are with the family. Betsy worked closely with me when the Town was buying what we call the Curit property. Her love of Chebeague shone through as we crafted an agreement that provided for coastal access, land conservation and affordable housing on the island. She and her sisters were very generous as they thought about Chebeague's future.
