Yarmouth - Francis (Frank) Pendleton Johnson died peacefully and quietly with his family holding him by the hand on September 20, 2011. He was born in Belfast, ME on September 13, 1935, son of Robert W. and Catherine Pendleton Johnson. He attended schools in Belfast after moving to Rumford and graduated from Stevens High School. At Stevens he was an outstanding athlete and was All-American in football, baseball and basketball. His senior year at Stevens High had a day called “Frank Johnson Day.” His biography was sent to Basketball Magazine listing him as being 7’2” – he had many college offers but when it was discovered Frank was only 6’2” the offers were withdrawn.
He entered Bowdoin College where he was active in basketball, president of DKE Fraternity and other organizations. The friendships that were formed at Bowdoin lasted a lifetime. After Bowdoin he and his new bride Sally moved to New York City where he entered Columbia University and earned an M.B.A. He then moved to Maine where Frank worked for Ernst & Ernst. He was a partner for many years. He then worked as a principle at BerryDunn. He belonged to a number of professional organizations, was a trustee at St. Josephs and Falmouth Memorial Library. He was a member of Miles Grant Country Club and Portland Country Club.
Frank loved being with his three children: Linda, Samuel, and Elizabeth. His best times were on the ski slopes and at the many camps rented over the years. He thoroughly enjoyed coaching Samuel’s little league team even though they never won a game. He and Sally had 53 beautiful years together and enjoyed being together whether traveling, on the golf course, or elsewhere. They had some sad times, but mostly it was a fun journey.
Sally and Frank lived most of their marriage in Falmouth, ME but in later years lived in Yarmouth, ME and wintered in Stuart, FL. He was pre-deceased by his parents and his brother Samuel. He leaves his loving wife, Sally, his beloved children and their respective spouses: Linda and Victor, Samuel and Kristen, and Elizabeth and Titus. He was the deeply loved “Bumpy” by his grandchildren Hugo, Maxwell, Emily, Jacob, Grace, William, and Anna. He will be missed by all.
