

Born November 8, 1948 in Sterling, Illinois to Glenn and Garnett Hoffman, he graduated from Sterling High School in 1966. Fred then attended Western Illinois University where he met his wife, Pamela Sue Rigsby. They married after graduation and both began their teaching careers. Shortly thereafter, Fred was drafted into the Army in 1971. Upon his discharge, he used the GI Bill to attend Loyola University for his Master’s degree and then The University of Illinois at Chicago School of Law (formerly the John Marshall Law School) where he earned his JD. He clerked for a year in Quincy, Illinois before he began practicing law in central Illinois. Fred was an attorney for over 25 years in Pekin, Illinois, Peoria, Illinois and then Detroit, Michigan, when he pivoted back to teaching and became a professor at Oakland University.
Upon his retirement in 2016, he and Pam moved to Yarmouth, Maine to be closer to their grandkids. He is survived by his son, Kirk (Tiffany) and grandchildren Alice and Timothy of Falmouth, Maine; his brother Steve (Barb) of Muscatine, IA, and his brother Jim (Nancy) of West Branch, Iowa.
A musician his entire life, Fred was known for his long-standing role as the bass player for Lenny and the Shysters. No services are planned at this time, but donations can be made to your local Legal Aid society.
