Born and raised in Freeport, ME, Geneva, “Jeanie” grew up in a loving and devoted home. Both her parents had many siblings who all were located in what was then the small town of Freeport. She grew up around many aunts, uncles and cousins creating a childhood full of rich memories. She always had a strong love for animals, and as a little girl, would spend hours playing dress up with her many cats, her pet Raccoon Smokey and her dog Jack.
She met, fell in love and married her husband Leslie, also of Freeport where they bought their homestead and raised 2 beautiful daughters.
Before starting her career in Nursing, Geneva was a wonderful homemaker. She took great pride in creating and tending a beautiful home environment for her husband and children. She also took great efforts in creating wonderful memories and adventures including camping, going to County Fairs and berry picking in the summer. She jumped at the chance to provide her children with various opportunities when they showed interest. Sports, Baton, Band or any other activity they mentioned, she would encourage them to give it a try. She looked for ways to nurture their God-given gifts and talents in these experiences.
Geneva spent her life serving others. Everyone who was blessed to know her will attest to her always being kind, selfless and ready to help in any way she could; especially to her precious family. She was wholeheartedly devoted to family all her life and would always share an encouraging word or deed.
In true accord, Geneva brought that joy to so many others as a CNA/CRMA in Nursing. Her career started at the Freeport Nursing Home where she worked for over 10 years and then carried over to Ledgeview Assisted Living for an additional 20 years before retiring. She also used her professionalism to care for her own aging parents in their home. She was a blessing to all the residents she served as well as her co-workers.
Lifelong best friend Donna Dodge and she shared all seasons of life together. Living across the street from each other in their adult lives, they both shared and grew in their lives as wives, mothers, homemakers, grandmothers and even into their careers as nurses. They remained friends all their lives and were a Dynamic Duo in their careers working together, training others and setting an example of how to provide exemplary care for the elderly.
Geneva walked in a quiet manner and pondered the things of the Lord in her heart. Her life was a testimony to the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and she extended that grace to everyone. She truly loved all people and really cared for their well-being. What broke people’s hearts would break her heart; what brought them joy would bring her joy. Her empathy for others was obvious to all.
As much as she felt called to care for others outside her home, she absolutely loved all her “babies”. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren filled her life with joy and energy as she made countless memories with them all. She was lovingly nicknamed G’Ma by her grandchildren and never missed a sporting event, birthday party or any other special occasion.
She also created and shared many special times with her great-nephew Gabriel all throughout his childhood and school years. She had a very special bond with each and every one of the children in her life. She loved them all so dearly.
She was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt who loved nothing more than spending time with her family.
Geneva was predeceased by her husband of 39 years Leslie M. Cass, her parents, Archie S. Wing and Estella Dennison Wing, her brother Alvin Wing and his wife Jeanette, and her sister Brenda Wing all of Freeport.
She is survived by her 2 daughters: Brenda Cass Whittemore and her husband Sam of Milton, FL and Sandra Cass Perkins and her husband Bill of Freeport, ME. She leaves behind 5 grandchildren: Sammy Whittemore and his wife Ashley of Pensacola, FL, Cassie Nowell and her husband Josh of Freeport, ME, Bejay Perkins and his wife Jericca of Palermo, ME and Jannessa Williams and her husband Chris of Milton, FL and Gabriel Sampson of Turner, ME.
She also leaves behind 9 Great-Grandchildren: Elodie, Oliver, Elijah, Henry, Elisabeth, Penelope, Tobias, Vincent and Josephine.
The family of Geneva Cass would like to extend a deep, heartfelt thank you to the Staff of Hawthorne House of Freeport ME for not only their professionalism, but more so the personal care, compassion, love, laughter and devotion making her journey there as comfortable and joyful as was possible. We are truly grateful and beyond blessed for all those who were involved in her daily care.
As per her request, a private Celebration of Life for her immediate family members will be held at a later date.
