George J. Myers

George was born on January 3, 1929 in Northampton, MA to Stella (Bak) and Harold Myers. He graduated from Northampton High School in 1947. Just three years later, he married his high school sweetheart, Katherine (Kay) O’Neal of Hatfield, MA and moved to Florence, MA.

George’s first job out of high school was as a clerk for McCallum’s Department Store in Northampton, which later became part of the Forbes & Wallace Department Store chain in Springfield, MA. He worked himself up the ladder, holding positions at various store locations as store buyer, assistant store manager, and eventually, store manager.

While raising his family in Florence, George was very active in the Jaycees, serving as President. He also held state positions within the Jaycee organization. However, as a Jaycee member, he was most memorably known as the Easter Bunny at the annual Easter egg hunt at Look Park each year. He and Kay also played an active role in the Republican state and presidential campaigns over the years.

In 1976, George and Kay decided to leave the corporate world to pursue their dream of owning their own business. They took a big step, leaving their lifelong homes and careers to become motel owners in their favorite vacation town, Ogunquit, Maine. Over the years, they developed lifetime friendships with the many families who stayed with them. During the twenty years as owner of the Ogunquit Innkeepers Motel, George was very active in the community, serving as president of the Rotary Club and the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce.

In 1996, they sold their business and retired to a 5-acre home in the country in Yarmouth, Maine. During his retirement years, George was a volunteer in the Yarmouth schools and at the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce. He also worked as a desk clerk at the Downeast Motel, bringing back fond memories of his days back in Ogunquit.

In 2009, following the death of Kay, George moved to Bartlett Circle Senior Housing in Yarmouth, making many friends there. In early 2016, he moved to Ledgeview Assisted Living, where he contently spent his final days.

No matter where he resided - in Northampton, Florence, Worcester, Ogunquit, or Yarmouth - he always took his one passion with him: the Red Sox. There was no greater fan of the Sox or expert when it came to recalling statistics.

George will be remembered for his infectious sense of humor, his ability to strike up a conversation with just about anyone, and most importantly, the tremendous pride he took in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

George is survived by his daughters Debbie Godowsky and husband, Barry, of Yarmouth, ME and Cindy (CJ) Hardy and husband, Malcolm (Mac) of Port Charlotte, FL. He leaves two grandchildren, Katie Ouellette and husband, Evan, of Dedham, MA and David Godowsky of Brooklyn, NY. He also is survived by three great-grandchildren, Avery, Maren, and Quinn Ouellette, and three nieces, Katherine Beaudette of Glamorgan, South Wales; Mary Messersmith of Chatham, MA; and Lyra Myers of Menlo Park, CA. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Harold Myers of Northampton, MA and Joseph Myers of McKinleyville, CA.

A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Friday, May 5 at Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane in Yarmouth, followed by interment at the Holy Cross Cemetery on Smith St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Global Center for Glycogen Storage Disease (333 Bloomfield Ave., Suite D, West Hartford, CT 06117) in honor of his great granddaughter, Maren.
