Gertrud was raised in Germany, where she attended school for sewing and worked as a waitress in her early years. In January 1967, she immigrated to the United States to begin a new chapter in her life. After arriving in Maine, she worked as a seamstress for Van Baalen in Rockland and later for M & G Manufacturing also in Rockland, and Healthtex in Portland.
While working there, she met the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Achorn. The two were married in 1970 and made their home in Yarmouth, where they shared 56 wonderful years of marriage together.
Gertrud and Bob enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and made several memorable trips back to Germany. One of Gertrud’s favorite destinations was Pennsylvania’s Amish country, where she especially enjoyed connecting with the Amish community through their shared German language and heritage. Together, they also cherished trips to Niagara Falls and many other places over the years.
She was predeceased by her son, Peter, and seven siblings.
She is survived by her husband, Bob Achorn of Yarmouth; three siblings; and many good friends whose lives she touched throughout the years.
Gertrud will be remembered for her hardworking nature, her love of family and travel, and the warmth she shared with those around her.
A Committal Service will be held at Achorn Cemetery, in Rockland, on May 27, 2026, at 1:00 pm.
