Gregg was born on August 17, 1937 in Minneapolis, MN to Benton Silloway and Shirley Constance (Aygarn) Silloway. His family moved due to his father’s career, living in St. Louis, MO, and New Canaan, CT, where he graduated from high school in 1955. He attended College in CT where he met his first wife Mary Ann (Powers) (Silloway) Philpot (†) originally of Auburn, ME.
Gregg and Mary Ann lived in Madison, NJ. From there, Gregg would pilot his plane on the weekends to Maine. He loved Maine so much that he and Mary Ann moved to Falmouth, ME in 1970 and at the same time, they also purchased land on Mooselookmeguntic Lake where they built a camp that has been one of Gregg’s life-long projects.
Adventurous and an avid outdoorsman Gregg lived life to its fullest. One of his motto’s was, “work hard, play hard” and that he did. He worked many years as a mechanical engineer (he could fix anything!) at Rockwood Systems. When not tinkering around with an engine or working on his camp he was mountain biking, sailing, windsurfing, downhill and cross-country skiing, hiking, snowmobiling, making maple syrup, cutting wood in his woodlot, rebuilding a Model-A or hiking with T.R.A.C.
Gregg’s competitive spirit was evident in his love for racing, whether on sailboats, mountain bikes, or in alpine ski competitions with the Madison Ski Club. As a former member of The Portland Yacht Club he enjoyed racing his Ensign, “sail-o-way”, in the Tuesday night races on Casco Bay.
Gregg also liked to help others and to give back to his community. He has been a member of The Falmouth Lions Club since 1970, has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, surveyed streams with the Rangeley Heritage Trust, and for many years has ridden his bike in both The Dempsey Challenge as well as in The Trek Across Maine to raise money for those impacted by cancer and for the American Lung Association.
Gregg is survived by his daughter, Kari Constance Silloway, his son-in-law Cedric Cyrill Nieser and his grandson Emil Anton Nieser who live in Stuttgart, Germany as well as his Brother, Benton Silloway Jr. (Chip), sister-in-law, Leslie (Patton) Silloway of Wilmington, NC and nephew’s Devin, Darby and Torey Silloway. He is also survived by his longtime friend Merilyn Brunton of Rangeley, ME.
May Gregg’s sense of humor, strong work ethic, sense of adventure, competitive drive, love of the outdoors and unlimited kindness be an inspiration to everyone!
A celebration of Gregg’s life will be held on August 30th at 10 AM at Rangely Congregational Church 2 High Street, Rangely, Maine.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Gregg’s honor to the
