Jake Phipps
December 15, 1975 – November 2, 2012
Jason “Jake” Phipps, 36
Yarmouth – Jason “Jake” Orrin Phipps, 36, of Yarmouth, died unexpectedly on Friday November 2, 2012 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Jake was born on December 15, 1975 in Portland a son of William and Patricia (Kelley) Phipps. He grew up in Yarmouth and graduated from Greely High School, Class of 1995.
Over the years Jake enjoyed participating in Special Olympics, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and most recently kayaking. His passion however was harness racing. He was a member of the Maine Harness Racing Association and worked as a groomer for Don Richards and his Grandfather Orrin Phipps. He was a judge at the Maine State Truck Driving Championships. Jake worked at Yarmouth Lumber as a shop assistant. His open and uplifting personality followed him wherever he went and he would go out of his way just to say “hello”.
Jake loved to be with his family – be it trucking with his Dad, going to church with his Mom, spending time with his nieces and nephews or hanging out with his brother and sisters – it was all good. His love for them was as big as the man and he will be greatly missed.
Jake is survived by his father, William H. Phipps and step-mother Pam Rogers of Yarmouth; his mother, Patricia A. Phipps of Windham; his sister, Kristalyn Phipps; his brother, Kevin Phipps; his sister, Laurie Balzanelli and her husband Michael; his sister, Sheryl Gray; his grandfather, Orrin Phipps; three nieces; five nephews and hundreds of friends.

To the Phipps family, we are so very sorry for the loss of such a kind and friendly soul. Pat, I remember when I lived with you, Jake, Kevin and Kristalyn. You were all so welcoming epecially Jake although I think he was baffled by why I needed to have my alarm set 20 minutes ahead of time. I will never forget the morning that I was 20 minutes late for work because Jake had reset my clock to the correct time. I think he'd be happy to know that all my clocks are now set for the right time. Over the years we've enjoyed the visits with you and Jake watching football games, for special gatherings, or dinner just the four of us. We will miss his smile and conversations about horses.
Much love to you all always.

My dear Pat,
I was deeply saddened to learn of Jason's passing. I have such fond memories of that fair-haired little boy who joined my nursery school class so many years ago. And it was a joy to watch him grow into such a fine young man. I am so glad that I was able to reconnect with Jason when we had lunch at DiMillo's a while back, and I will always treasure the memory of that day. I know that Jason will live on in your heart and soul, and that all those precious memories will always be a part of you. Jason brought joy and happiness to everyone who touched his live, and I am blessed to have known him. I wish I could be with you right now, but it's not possible. I have not been able to reach you by phone, but please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May God comfort you in this difficult time.

Billy and wonderful family. We loved getting to know Jake last summer. You raised a fine son. I pray that friends and family uphold you and that each day was God's gift to you. His life was so full - he was a very happy man. Each one of you should be proud he was "yours". Hugs, Cindy and Sandy (Curren twins). YHS Class of 1967.

Pat, the shock and disbelief I felt after receiving Frank's call defies all logic! I have tried all three numbers I have for you, but to no avail. Please know I am thinking of you and so wish I could be by your side, hugging you closely. Jason was a treasure of your heart, and to lose him, is surely like losing a piece of yourself, All the love that he brought you has not left, for the essence of his soul will linger forever. It cannot escape your heart, for it has been there forever, and his halo of love is entwined with yours from here to eternity. xo Patti (Louisville, KY) 502/292-7516

Dirk and I are sending our thoughts and prayers to the family. When we were stabled in Cumberland I "always" got a "HEY" from him, and he always would be more than happy to take me to the winner's circle, but it wasn't only there that I got a "HEY" anywhere we were racing!!---He will be missed. He was a great asset to the racing community. Thinking of you all.

We are so sorry to hear about Jake. It has been a real shock to all of us, especially Glen, being a part of your family for so long and thinking of Jake as a younger brother. Thank you so much Kevin for calling us, it really meant alot to us. I just wanted your family to know that our daughter, Meagan, was inspired by Jake, she enjoyed going to the office and seeing him and he is the reason she is studying and enjoying the career she is in. He was a great young man and will be missed. Take care
