YARMOUTH - Hilda Jeanne Babbidge Nelson, 94, passed away September 15, 2018 in Yarmouth. She was born in Falmouth on June 5, 1924, the daughter of Forrest and Vera Babbidge. After graduating from Falmouth High Jeanne took a job teaching grades 1 through 6 in a one room school house in Harpswell, Maine. Later she worked in the Civil Service in Portland supporting the war effort, eventually transferring to Washington DC to work at the Department of the Treasury. On weekends she volunteered for the Red Cross, driving buses to various functions around the area. During one of these trips to Ft. Belvoir she met her future husband Bobby L. Nelson.
Jeanne spent the next five decades supporting her Army career husband, raising 4 children, working with the civil service, and traveling the world. She enjoyed crafts, interior design, gardening, and exploring. Eventually Jeanne and Bobby settled in Palm Desert CA. She started a small service-oriented business and in their spare time enjoyed travelling to Las Vegas, becoming quite the card sharp at the Blackjack table, and returning to Maine every summer. Jeanne moved back to Maine in 2013 to be closer to her daughter and family.
She is survived by her sister, Roberta Abel of Seaside, OR, her brother, Howard Babbidge of Portland, ME, her daughter Susan S. Grant of Freeport, ME and Susan’s spouse Steve, and son Bruce F. of Youngsville, NC, along with seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Bobby and by her sons, David Ross Nelson and Mark Douglas Nelson.
