Hello, Ann and family,
It feels a little strange using this type of communication for such a personal event, but i decided to try it.
Thinking of you, John, and your famiily evokes many  memories of the numerous great times we had with you.  Our relationship began with the friendships of Andy, Paul, Ted, and Glen in early Wayneflete.  Our lives went on to be much enriched by our relationships with John, Ann and your family.  We have great memories of being in your home(s), Sunday  River, Wayneflete activities, and so much more over the years, including things we did with you and Ginny and Dick Kurtz.
John was a great physician and friend.  He lived a very full and rich life, especially related to his family.

I met John about 50 years ago, when I was an Intern/General Practice Resident at Maine Medical Center and he was an ENT Attending Physician.  I spent many hours learning from him, both at the hospital and in his office: things that greatly  helped me in my practice as an Emergency Department Physician.  Later he frequently would call me and arrange what he called "ENT/Emergency Medicine Conferences" on the chairlifts at Sunday River,  when we both had a day off.  He was a great friend, mentor, and a true gentleman.

My condolences to the family of Dr Knowles. I had the honor of working with him at Mercy Hospital. Our job in recovery room was to care for his often young  patients until they could return to the arms of their parents. When Dr Knowles watched us comforting especially his very young patients, he decided we needed our very own rocking chair for our youngest. He soon gave us a high backed rocker that was well used in recovery room for years. A kind and generous man.

First, we want to express our sincere condolences to Ann and the rest of the family.  We know that this has been a journey.  Second, we could go on and on about John and his positive attributes and giving personality.   He and Ann were so very kind to us and our children when we came to Maine 20 years ago.   Moreover, he was incredibly supportive to Mercy Hospital and to leadership in his role in ENT and as a member of the Board.   He was always engaged, empathetic, and looking for solutions.   We loved his stories about his skiing endeavors.  We considered he and Ann good friends and regretful that COVID has kept us all so distant in recent times. John was always a pillar of the ENT community, beginning when I was a resident in '71 through my practice years in Maine. Always a leader whose advice - surgical or just plain life issues - could be counted on. He will be missed.

My deepest sympathy to you, Ann and your loving family on the loss of Dr. Knowles (as I knew him). His unfailing kindness and humorous twinkle in the eye will be memories I will remember. He was a staunch supporter of the Sisters of Mercy and Mercy Hospital and for this we shall be ever grateful.

Dr.Knowles was one of the best physicians I had the privilege to work for. He was a very dedicated and caring person/physician. He was well respected in the community and in the medical field. My thoughts and prayers go out to his lovely wife Ann and is children and grandchildren.

Dr.  John Knowles was a wonderful neighbor on Sandy Point Road. While walking Sandy, his dog, he would always smile and give a big "hello!"  John was a very kind and gentle man and we could tell that his love for his family was immense. A fond memory is that the Knowles encouraged our daughter and the other children to play in the treehouse in their yard.  Ann placed surprise books and toys in there for the kids. It was always a pleasure to see Ann and John at the neighborhood gatherings. We have missed having them in the neighborhood for the past few years and offer our sincere condolences to Ann and the entire family.
