1926-2011
Portland - Linwood York, 85, of Pownal, died Monday, November 21, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation and Residence as a result of a long battle with Alzheimer’s. His family was by his side when he drifted off to be with the Lord. He was born to the late Percy and Elsie York on September 14th, 1926. Linwood attended Portland schools.
On October 20th 1945, he married the love of his life, Jacqueline Ayer, of New Gloucester and spent 60 wonderful years together until her death on November 3, 2005. Mr. York joined the U.S. Navy Amphibian Forces in the European theater of WWII on January 8, 1945 and was honorably discharged on April 18, 1946 with the rank of Seaman First Class. He worked at Anderson’s Lobster Trap Mill in North Yarmouth, Maine for 32 years as a sawyer making lobster traps. He lived close to his birthplace, having built their home on a parcel of land divided from the old farmstead in Pownal until taking residence at St. Joseph’s in 2008 due to poor health.
Mr. York was a very creative man. Among his many interests and hobbies were wood carving, drawing, music, hunting, fishing, reading and horse shoes. He was a self-taught musician and could play the mandolin, guitar and banjo and would get together with his brothers and sisters and have a great time jamming it up. He loved to tinker around the house, especially in his garage. For someone who had only eight years of formal education, Linwood knew a little something about almost everything. You asked him a question, he had the answer. He was an amazing human being, kind, gentle, respectful, self-dependent, generous, and he never had a bad word to say about anyone. He was great to be around because he had the best sense of humor. He’s leaving behind a legacy of wonderful memories and an example of how we should live our lives to earn our way to heaven. He was predeceased by a son Linwood Perry York; granddaughter Amanda Campbell; brothers, Hartwell and Calvin York; sisters Eleanor Trask and Virginia Clukey.
Linwood is survived by two children: Carol Huntley and husband David of Buxton, Diane Campbell and husband Zane of Lisbon Falls; four grandchildren: Rory Huntley and wife Normajean of West Buxton, Davina Burrell and husband Mark of Windham, Nicolle Baade and husband Paul of Lisbon Falls, and Zane Campbell III of Durham; nine great-grandchildren, Zachery, Austin and Mariah Huntley, Dalton and Shaylin Burrell, Alexa and Ashley Harmon and Wyatt Baade, and Zane Campbell IV.
A period of visitation will be held on Sunday November 27th from 1-2 PM followed by a funeral service at 2 PM at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. Burial will be private at Pine Grove Cemetery, Hallowell Road, North Yarmouth.
