Margaret Wallace "Maggie" Soule passed gracefully on November 15, 2010 after battling a recurrent illness. Born in Portland, Maine on September 16, 1941, the eldest child of William Enos and Jean "Polly" Soule, she attended Yarmouth schools and graduated from Waynflete School in Portland in 1959. She received a BA from Smith College and graduate degrees from Boston University and Middlebury College and taught English in public and private schools in Massachusetts before returning to Maine in the 1970's. A career change led to jobs as editorial coordinator, J. Weston Walch publisher (1980-84), and as publications director at Waynflete School (1986-1996). As a Smith alumna, she served twice as 1963 class secretary and once as a co-fund agent. She was also active in the Maine Track Club from 1984-2010, serving as secretary and later membership chair. She directed the Hannaford Turkey Trot 5K road race for several years and completed three marathons while in her 50's, including the Marine Corps Marathon, the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon (raising $9,000.00 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society) and finally the New York City Marathon. In the 1980's she became a founding member of the Yarmouth (now Royal River) Land Trust as well as a trustee of the Merrill Memorial Library. She joined the board of the Yarmouth Historical Society in 2005 and served as board chair from 2008-2010.
After retiring from Waynflete in 1996, she collaborated with Leonard L. Brooks on Celebrating Waynflete: 100 Years in the Life of a School, published in 1998. Following that, she set up and maintained the Waynflete archives.
Maggie would especially like to be remembered as the owner of Rusty, a pet horse that greeted visitors daily for 25 years at the corner of Prince's Point and Morton Roads. Nearby stood a magnificent elm tree, taken down in the 1970's due to Dutch elm disease. The tree was easily the equal of Herbie in age and size and could be seen all the way from Route 88. Maggie also cherished her times at Little Bustins, the Casco Bay Island owned by the Soule family for three generations.
Surviving Maggie are her sister, Mary LeMaistre (Andre) of Mitchell Ledge Farm in Freeport; her brother William of West Buxton; nephew, P. Henchman Soule LeMaistre of Laguna Beach, CA; three nieces, Lydia Strong (Robert) of Hampden, Olivia West LeMaistre of Freeport, Ursula Wilmot (Warren) of Freeport; three grand nieces, Hawley and Phoebe Strong and Murreal Wilmot; and many cousins and friends.
A memorial service will be held at the First Parish Congregational Church, 116 Main Street, Yarmouth at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, November 19, 2010. Please visit www.lindquistfuneralhome.com to share your condolences, memories and tributes with the Soule family.
In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to The Waynflete School Archives Endowment Fund, c/o Sally Price, 360 Spring Street, Portland, Me. 04102.
