FREEPORT – Marilyn Groves, 87, of Freeport passed away Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Hawthorne House with her family by her side.
She was born in Freeport on March 31, 1930, the daughter of Edgar and Louise Brown, and was the youngest of six children. She attended Freeport schools and graduated from Freeport High School in 1947.
As a young woman, she worked for L. L. Bean and his wife as a traveling companion and assistant, as well as working in hospitality in Florida for a period, before marrying Wallace “Wally” S. Groves on September 5, 1953 at the Freeport Congregational Church.
She and her family attended the Freeport First Parish Congregational Church for many years, where Marilyn sat on the choir. She very much enjoyed singing, and those who know her remember her fondness for yodeling as well. Marilyn enjoyed cooking, reading, music, and her family and friends.
Marilyn was a homemaker for many years while raising a family, remaining a life-long resident of Freeport. In 1971, she returned to work at L. L. Bean, where she would work until her retirement. She enjoyed her long career as a customer service supervisor, and then a staffing manager in the human resources department.
Surviving family includes her two sons, Karl and Ollie Groves of Freeport, and Paul and Lauri Groves of Divide, CO; her daughter Noelle and husband Harvey of Old Orchard Beach; four grandchildren, Daniel, Elizabeth, Noah and Meghan; four great grandchildren, Abigail, Hannah, Isabelle and Emily; and sisters-in-law, Barbara Brown of Bangor, and Donna Groves of Westbrook. She was predeceased by her husband, Wally, and her five siblings, Edgar, Kenneth, Jerald, Phyllis and Claudia.
The family wishes to extend sincere appreciation and gratitude to the staff at Hawthorne House for their exceptional care of Marilyn over the last seven years. Services will be private.
