Scarborough – Marion Louise Knight Reed, 90, of North Yarmouth died on Sat May 12, 2012 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. She was born at Crockett’s Corner, North Yarmouth on June 24, 1921, a daughter of Philip E. Knight and Eva Crockett. She attended Dunn’s Grammar School, was a Campfire Girl and graduated from North Yarmouth Academy, Class of 1939. She was a member of the North Yarmouth Methodist Church.
During high school Marion worked at her father’s mill, Philip E. Knight Lumber Co., nailing lettuce crates for farmers in Cape Elizabeth. After high school she worked one summer at Homewood Inn, in Yarmouth, before starting work as a bookkeeper in her father’s office. During WWII the mill was converted to sawing oak for keels and lumber for barges. She made three foot ammunition cases for shells, worked at the Stevens Sardines Factory and at Howard Johnson’s at mile 57 on the turnpike.
Marion married Norman H. Reed on June 6, 1942 and together they worked his family’s farm, “Cedar Spring Farm”, for 36 years. She loved working with her husband, raising hatching eggs that were shipped by train to Searsport and milking cows selling first to O’Donnel’s Dairy then for 30 years to “… wonderful Oakhurst Dairy”. Marion enjoyed working with their horses, “Dan” and “Dick”, doing many jobs with them until 1956 when the farm became too large and “…went to tractors”.
Marion had a broad range of interests: from raising German shepherds for 10 years, to learning lampshade and basket making, to oil painting, to Lowry organ lessons. She learned to play golf when she was 68 and took up bowling when she was 75.
After retiring, Marion and Norman enjoyed many trips in their mini motor home; a memorable one was the trip to Calgary, Alberta for the Calgary Stampede. Their last trip was to Alaska after which Norman was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Norman died Feb. 18, 2001 and her sister, Irene Arbo, died July 1, 1989. Marion is survived by a loving and caring family of nieces and nephews: Frank Fuller, Carol Godreau and Carlene Mastroianni of Connecticut; Jane Cleaves, Dorothy McAloney and Joan Kalbach of Yarmouth and Stephen Reed of Vermont. She also leaves 14 great and 16 great-great nieces and nephews, as well as two great-great-great nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 16, 2012 at 10:00 AM at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth followed by burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Route 9, North Yarmouth.
