

Yarmouth- Marjorie Smith, 96, passed away peacefully November 24, 2017. Marjorie was born on January 23, 1921 in Portland to Edgar and Hilda (McCrum) Hagen. She graduated with the class of 1938 from Deering High School where she was enjoyed many sports, and excelled at swimming, a sport which she continued to enjoy until she was 90 years old. After high school she entered nurse training at Maine General School of Nursing. After completing her training in 1940 she remained at Maine General as an operating room nurse before managing a maternity ward. She married her high school sweetheart Clayton Smith in 1943 during WWII when Clayton entered the Navy. When Clayton returned from his duties in the military they moved to Yarmouth where they bought a home and began a family. Marjorie took on a role as a homemaker and raised four children. Marjorie enjoyed golf and was a member of the Freeport Golf Club, and also Toddy Brook in Yarmouth, and Bay Tree in Myrtle Beach, SC winning many trophies in both Ladies and Couples Leagues. Over the years many have eaten her classic chocolate chip cookies or found her knitting something for people she loved. Marjorie’s biggest accomplishment was raising her family. She and Clayton recently celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary.
Marjorie is survived by husband Clayton, son Jeff Smith, daughter Andrea and her husband Patrick Mullen, daughter-in-law Bonnie Smith, grandchildren; Richard (Chuck) Smith, Kelly Hensley, Conor Mullen, and Meg Mullen, and also great grandchildren.
Marjorie was predeceased by her parents Edgar and Hilda (McCrum) Hagen, her sister Virginia Hagen, and her two sons; Barry and Gregory Smith.
