1939 – 2019
FALMOUTH - Philip N. Sanborn, Sr., son of Marie Slaight Sanborn and Walter Greenwood Sanborn, born on April 29, 1939 passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of January 15, 2019 at his home in Falmouth.
Philip worked for the Portland Press Herald for 44 years, first in the garage maintaining the company fleet, and later in plant maintenance keeping the presses running.
A lifelong resident of Maine, he lived in Westbrook and later Portland, until moving to Falmouth in 1954. He was a prolific builder of machines and contraptions of every conceivable kind, as well as an accomplished woodworker who built his own house and garage.
From his younger years until a few years before his passing he enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his land in Otisfield was the material love of his life, and the place that brought him the most joy. Many trees gave their lives in the pursuit of Philip’s love of logging wood with his hand-built skidder to keep his family warm.
Philip was also an avid gardener, growing mountains of produce that fed not only his own family, but also many neighbors and friends as well. He waged many a battle with raccoons, deer, and most of all the dreaded woodchuck who tried to eat as much of his beloved garden as possible.
Philip is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Muriel Cobb Sanborn; daughter Lisa Smith and husband Christopher; daughter Laurel Gervais and husband Jeff and granddaughters Ava and Mya; son Philip Jr.; sisters Laura Glassock and Edith Wiseman; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to share their memories and offer their condolences by visiting Philip’s online guestbook at www.lindquistfuneralhome.com
The family would like to extend its sincerest thanks to the members of the Falmouth Rescue and Falmouth Police Department for their quick response and kindness in helping the family in their time of deepest sorrow.
Friends and family are invited to attend a time of visitation on Friday, January 25, 2019 from 4pm to 7pm at Lindquist Funeral Home.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Ln., Yarmouth, Maine, 04096. 846-4011.
