

Pownal – Pleem Ensel Jewett, 94, of Pownal, Maine passed away at his home on March 26, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 5, 1919 in North Yarmouth, ME to Ralph and Laura (Provencher) Jewett.
He was married to his beloved wife Florence “Pat” Jewett for 67 years before her passing in 2011. They made their home on the Jewett farm on Elmwood Road in Pownal where they raised their children. Pleem loved to work on his farm and was proud of the home he built with his own hands. He maintained a working farm for many years and always looked forward to the haying season with help from his family. He enjoyed working on the farm equipment with his son Harvey up until his death, and often rode on his land in his golf cart.
Pleem attended North Yarmouth Schools and started working in the Civilian Conservation Corp which provided jobs for young men, to relieve families who had difficulty finding jobs during the Great Depression in the United States. He then joined US Navy, during WW II on Sept. 16, 1942 along with his five brothers and spent his service years in the Pacific theater and was the last one of the brothers surviving the greatest generation. He was a member and past commander of the American Legion Post 83 John Arthur Stowell.
Pleem operated several markets in the Freeport, Pownal, New Gloucester, and Casco areas during different times of his career. He also worked for Freeport Shoe Company for a period of time then changed career paths and joined the Carpenter Union 517 which he retired from in 1984.
He enjoyed the family camp on Highland Lake in Windham, hunting, horse racing, and farming his land. He was a successful hunter who in his later years enjoyed watching the wildlife out his kitchen window. The Jewett farm was always a magnet for gathering of family and friends.
Pleem is survived by his sister Roberta Young of Gray, his son Terry Jewett and wife Brenda of Freeport; his daughter Nancy Ruest and her husband Les of Pownal; his daughter Sheila Day and husband Sonny of Pittston; his daughter Lori Valliere of Poland; his son Harvey Jewett and his companion Cheryl McMahon of Durham; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren and a large extended family. Pleem was predeceased by his parents, his siblings Joy, Noah, Euan, Osborn, Verena, Homer, Ellery, Byron, Conan, Orville, and Royce; his son Frank Jewett; his son-in-law David Valliere.

A time of visitation will be held on Monday March 31, 2014 from 1:00 -2:00 PM at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. A reception will be held immediately after the service at the Durham Amvet’s Hall in Durham. Interment will be held at a later date this spring in Walnut Hill Cemetery in North Yarmouth.
