

Yarmouth – Richard Freeman Groves, 86, of Yarmouth, passed away on October 19, 2012 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after an extended illness. He was born on February 1, 1926 to Freeman S. and Dora F. (Goldrup) Groves. He attended Cumberland and Yarmouth schools and after being drafted into the Army during WWII, he returned to graduate from North Yarmouth Academy. He earned an Associate Degree in Business from Portland Junior College and worked in the banking and finance business until his retirement in 1988.
He was an avid gardener and woodworker and loved taking his boat out in Casco Bay and spending time on Cousins Island with his family. He was a Mason, a 50 year member of the First Parish Congregational Church of Yarmouth and belonged to the American Legion and Yarmouth Historical Society. After his retirement he enjoyed traveling with his wife Carla to Florida in the winter and most recently spent time at Sebago Lake in the summer.
Richard leaves his wife of 62 years, Carla M. (Guimond) Groves and four children: Richard F. Groves, Jr. (Conny), Amy E. Ward (John), William M. Groves (Laurie) and Patricia J. Groves, as well as six grandchildren: Kimberly M. Ward, Katherine E. Wilson (Zackary), Daniel W. Groves, Christina M. Groves, Steven M. Groves and Samuel R. Groves and a sister, Miriam E. Rand. He was predeceased by two sisters: Margaret I. Erskine and Ruth Blow.
A graveside service will be held on Wed. October 24, 2012 at 10:30 AM in Riverside Cemetery, 76 Smith Street, Yarmouth. A reception will follow at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 346 Main Street, Yarmouth.
