

Chebeague Island – Robert (Bob) J. Habig 97, passed away peacefully July 2, 2016, at Island Commons on Chebeague Island. Bob was born June 22, 1919 in Cumberland, MD, the son of Joseph and Veronica (Cook) Habig. Bob was the fifth of seven children.
Bob graduated from La Salle High School in Cumberland, MD in 1939. Upon graduation, Bob spent several years working with his father, who oversaw plumbing and heating at Paxtuent Air Station. In 1944 Bob joined the army, and was deployed overseas in 1945, serving his country in the Africa and Middle East Theater during WWII. After leaving the serviceBob returned to Maryland, overseeing a large federal public housing facility in Middle River of over 1200 units of for eight years until he and his family moved to Wilbraham, MA, where Bob worked as a civilian engineer for the 8th Air Force at Westover Air Force Base for twelve years.
In 1968, Bob and his family moved to Chebeague Island and Bob took a job at Maine National Bank, working as a teller, head teller, and in the “money room ” until he retired. Upon his retirement, Bob and his wife Katharine (Khaki) started a taxi service on Chebeague Island, where they serviced residents season round for over ten years. He was always active in the community, whether it was volunteer work or just lending a hand to some of the residents; he also served on the school board and the CTC board of directors. Bob’s quick smile, jokes, wise comments, and willingness to help others will truly be missed by all who knew him.
Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Katharine; his son, Clifford and wife Mary; grandson, Collin, stepgrandsons Robert and Daniel Hoffman; sister, Jeanne Huet, and several nieces and nephewsA celebration of Bob’s life will be held Saturday, July 9, 2016, at 2pm at the Chebeague Island Methodist Church 258 N. Road Chebeague Island, ME. Burial will immediately follow the services at the Chebeague Island Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Island Commons or Chebeague Library.
