1929 – 2018
YARMOUTH – Robert “Bruce” MacKay died peacefully at age 89 on December 15, 2018 following a brief illness. His devoted family was by his side as he passed away.
Bruce was born in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts where he grew up with his parents, three brothers and two sisters, all of whom pre-deceased him. He attended Boston English High School and went on to earn his degree from Northeastern University. Immediately following graduation, Bruce was inducted into the U.S. Army and served for two years during the Korean War.
Bruce was employed at Nuclear Metals Inc. (NMI) in Concord, MA and served in various capacities for over 30 years before retiring as Vice President of Manufacturing.
Bruce is survived by Rosemary, his loving wife of almost 60 years, and his son Donald MacKay and wife Susan of Veazie, ME, and daughter Alison Moore and husband Jack of Yarmouth ME. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Lydia and Stuart MacKay and Sean, James and Michael Moore.
While growing up in Jamaica Plain, Bruce developed a keen interest in astronomy. He joined an amateur telescope club where he made his own telescope. He enjoyed sharing this interest with his children and grandchildren on many a clear night. He had a life-long love of animals and birds, always protecting and caring for them. In later years, Bruce focused on sorting out his large stamp collection.
Above all, Bruce will be remembered for his kindness, gentleness and decency. He was always ready to help and encourage family members, friends and strangers. He was never too busy to offer a helping hand. His presence will be sorely missed, but he will be in our hearts forever.
