Robert L. “Bub” Thurlow, Jr., 52

NORTH YARMOUTH – Robert L. “Bub” Thurlow, Jr., 52, of North Yarmouth passed away on the night of January 29th, 2013. He died surrounded by his loving family and friends in his home, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Bub was born on February 16th, 1960 in Portland, the son of Robert and Constance (Avery) Thurlow. He attended Yarmouth schools and went on to become a master plumber, who carried on the family business, Thurlow Plumbing and Heating.

Bub was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, and snowmobiling. Some of his favorite times were spent camping with his family and friends in Eustis or at the family camp in Rangeley. Bub was full of life and laughter, and lived each day to the fullest. He had an exceptional social talent and could make friends wherever he went. He was a practical joker who maintained his wonderful and quirky sense of humor even throughout his illness.

He is survived by his daughters, Laura Thurlow and Katie Thurlow; his sister, Betsey Barter; his nephews Ed, Dan, John, and James, as well as very many special and close friends. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Pat, his niece Jessica, and his close friend Harold.

A memorial service celebrating Bub’s life was to be held on Saturday February 9th, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the North Yarmouth Congregational Church, corner of Routes 115 and 231, North Yarmouth but due to weather this has been changed to Sunday February 10, 2013 at 1:00 PM. Please visit to view a video collage of Bub’s life and to share your condolences, memories and tributes with his family.

Dear Betsy,

It is so hard to find the words I want to say. I cannot comprehend that Bub is gone. My dear Aunt Evelyn joins me in expressing our sorrow. Bub was a favorite of ours and always will be. I have known him since he was a child (knew all of you) and loved having all of you come by and pick chesnuts! Our families go way back - I knew your grand parents and of course your mother and father. I remember when your parents built their home on the land my grand mother and great aunt sold to them. The Thurlow's, the Wentworth's and the Anderson's!! What lovely days those were. Patty Hewitt, Mike and I were always about having fun with one of you .......

I loved Bub's visits after he'd completed his work. How we'd chat and chat and laugh at local stories!

Bub's loss is so hard for you. I realize how you are still grieving over losing Patty. We know life isn't fair but I wish we weren't reminded of it so often.

I would love to get together with you and have a nice visit. I want to give you a hug ...... I couldn't go to Bub's service to give you a hug there. I wasn't plowed out yet.

Bub and you come to my mind everyday. My prayers are with you both and to Bub's daughters.

I will really miss him. Truly I will.

I know he liked to be called "Bob" but he will always be "Bub" to me. Hope he forgives me.
