Yarmouth – Russell Allen MacLeod passed away quietly at his home in Yarmouth on Monday, June 29, 2015. He passed two days before his 98th birthday and after a life well lived. Russell was the son of Herbert and Ora (Skinner) MacLeod, born in Scotstown, Quebec on July 1, 1917. He grew up in Belmont, MA and graduated in 1939 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in Industrial Biology. Upon graduation, Russell was hired by Burnham and Morrill in Portland, where he established a quality control lab. He remained at B&M until his retirement in 1976, but continued on staff as a consultant for several years thereafter.
In 1940, Russell married Elaine Scott. Together they made their home in Yarmouth where they raised their boys, Dick and John. They enjoyed 52 years together until Elaine’s death in 1992, traveling and spending many seasons salmon fishing at their camp on East Grand Lake.
Russell’s second marriage, to Shirley (Greene) Shedd in 1995, was filled with travels to England and Scotland to explore family heritage and with summer vacations to Shirley’s family home on Little Deer Isle.
Russell is survived by his wife Shirley; his sons Dick and John; daughters-in-law Barbara (Skeats) and Amelia (Payson); grandchildren: Heather, Anne (Andrew Smith), Christopher (Anik Nadeau), William and James; great-grandchildren Cayden and Sophie Smith. In addition, he was stepfather to Andrew and Kim Shedd. He will be dearly missed and well-remembered by family and friends.
The family would especially like to thank and remember Russell’s wonderful team of caregivers – Angelica, Jill, Lynne and Katherine – who filled his days with love, good humor, dignity and who made it possible for him to remain in his home until his death.
At his request, there will be no funeral. A graveside remembrance for his family will be held at a later date.
