North Yarmouth – Wayne “Scott” Decker, 66, died at home on Monday, December 23, 2013. “Scott” was the first born of Charles M. Decker and Frances (Carleton) Decker. He was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather and husband. He grew up in Milo, Maine, attending local schools where he made many friendships. He graduated from Milo High School in 1965. Scott went on to graduate from the University of Maine’s Civil Engineering Technology course and soon after married his high school sweetheart, Suzanne Marie Pullen in 1967.
Scott and Suzanne had two beautiful children; Jeffrey Scott and Jillane Marie. In 1971, Suzanne and Scott were involved in a tragic auto accident and sadly Suzanne lost her life. Scott recovered from the accident and became both Mom & Dad to his two young children. In 1973, Scott met and married Cynthia DiBiase. Together they had a daughter, Joyelle Dawn and the family became complete, strong, loving and grateful to have such a wonderful man in their world. The family moved to North Yarmouth in 1977 where the children attended Cumberland schools and where Scott and Cindy were kept very busy with life.
As a young Engineer, Scott was employed by Edward C. Jordan Co. for over 20 years, later leaving the company to form the engineering firm Squaw Bay Corp. with his longtime friends and partners. Squaw Bay was renamed SYTDesign Consultants in 1999; remaining an active Civil Engineering firm in Cumberland, Maine until the present time. Scott and Peter Tubbs held the company together up until Scott could no longer actively participate in the business.
During those working years, Scott was very involved in the community and the Cumberland-North Yarmouth Lions Club. He served as President, received the Lion of the Year and Citizen of the Year awards. It was during that time that Scott donated a kidney to his wife Cindy’s brother, Johnny DiBiase. Johnny is still enjoying a wonderful family life today and the family will always be lovingly grateful! Scott was also an avid runner completing a marathon in 1990. Scott loved to hunt with his dad, Charlie; brother Dave; cousin Jim; son Jeff and son-in-law David. Scott and Cindy built their “dream camp” in 2006 on a beautiful little secluded pond near Milo where many wonderful times were spent with family and friends.
Unfortunately it was also 2006 that Scott was diagnosed with mylodysplastic syndrome which advanced to Leukemia. He received two stem cell transplants from his brother, Dave, with the family’s great gratitude. Scott was able to go on and enjoy life with family and friends as best he could while fighting a very long and often very difficult battle for over 7 years. The Leukemia was in remission and life was being enjoyed as much as possible.
In early October, Cindy noticed that Scott was showing a deterioration of his motor skills. Upon testing it was discovered that he had a glioblastoma cancerous brain tumor. Scott underwent an operation and began treatment, but was unable to finish his treatments. Cindy and their three children brought Scott home on December 20, 2013. They stayed by his side with love and admiration until he passed.
Scott is predeceased by his mother and father. He will be forever sadly missed by his loving wife of 40 years, “Cindy”; his son Jeff Decker and wife Nancy; his daughter Jillane Bolduc and husband Chris; his daughter Joyelle DiBiase and husband David; along with eight wonderful grandchildren: Aspen, Dawson, Logan, Eric, Aynslie, Gavin, Matthew and Mikelle. He will also be missed by his brother, David Decker; sister Sheila Perry; sister Peggy Card; brother-in-law Johnny DiBiase, brother-in-law Camillo DiBiase, sister-in-law Maria Doyle; cousin Jim Decker and all their families. Scott is also survived by several cousins. He will be remembered by his family, dear friends and close acquaintances as a great guy, a loving family man, a man of strong political and social convictions and with a tremendous amount of courage and determination.
