Born in Benevento, Italy in the town of Sante Croce, he immigrated to the United States with his parents and brothers at 10 years old, to Yonkers, NY where attended school and was graduated from Yonkers High School.
He served as an airplane mechanic in the US Army Air Force in the South Pacific Theatre of World War II. He was overseas for the four years of his deployment and would often describe his time in the service as an opportunity to learn. Indeed true he maintained a friendship spanning over 70 years with a young boy of 15 he first met while serving in the Philippines.
A life-long member in good standing of VFW and served as Recording Secretary and Treasurer of his local during the 1960s and 70s. He was a member of the International Laborer’s Union and was retired from the ViConn Construction Corp as a foreman.
He met his retirement with an abundance of creative energy and throughout the next half century he undertook various parts both professionally and as a volunteer. He worked as a set builder and by the time of his departure became the Scenic Designer for the Greystone Actors’ Studio of Yonkers, NY for such products as The Fantasticks, Butterflies Are Free, Company, The Glass Menagerie, I Do I Do, and an original musical, The Mouse Wedding, that had its world premier at The Masters School Theater in Dobbs Ferry, NY.
A champion of the underdog he worked as a community leader and was instrumental in the creation of the Boys and Girls Club of North Yonkers where he was one of the club’s Little League Baseball coaches.
He was married for 63 years to Amelia E. (nee Parlapiano) in 1950 whom she predeceased in 2013. He was a beloved father of three sons, his eldest Frank J. Capozzelli, predeceased him in 2008.
Albert is survived by son and daughter-in-law Peter and MaryLou (nee Mongelli) Capozzelli of Peekskill, NY, son Albert, Jr. of New York, NY and former wife of his late son, Margaret Engel.
He was a devoted grandfather of granddaughters: Jane, Natasha, Grace, and Karina and grandsons: Sergey and Gad and great grandchildren: Khylee, Leticia, Logan, and Sergey Junior and to great grandson Lucas, on the way.
There will be a memorial service at St. Joseph’s Cemetery on Friday, November 13, 2020 for the immediate family only. A celebration to Albert Capozzelli and his life is planned for his extended family and friends at a future date to be determined. A graveside service will be held on Friday November 13th at 1pm in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Yonkers, NY.
