

Amelia Harasimo (nee Kowal), a longtime Yonkers resident most recently residing in Hopewell Junction, died on Tuesday January 31, 2017 at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie. She was 93 years old. She was born on January 8, 1924 to Dionisi and Anna (Truchan) Kowal in Linlithgo, N.Y. She was raised and educated in Yonkers and graduated from Commerce High School. Mrs. Harasimo was a clerical worker in the maternity department at St. John’s Riverside Hospital for 18 years until her retirement in 2000. During World War II, she was a riveter at Eastern Aircraft in Tarrytown and for the Avenger Fighter Plane. She also sold war bonds during the war. Mrs. Harasimo was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church and she enjoyed reading. On October 20, 1956, she married her loving husband, Peter Harasimo in St. Mary’s Russian Orthodox Church. Mr. Harasimo died on January 24, 1999. Amelia is survived by her two sons, Peter Harasimo Jr. of Hopewell Junction and Paul Harasimo and his wife Sandra of LaGrange, NY. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Cayla Harasimo. She was predeceased by a sister, Olga Balko. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Friday 2-6 pm. Parastas Service Friday 5 pm. Funeral Service will be held in St. Mary’s Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church on Saturday February 4th at 9:45 am. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery.
